Should I Give Up on My Enchanted Evening?

Hello everyone, first post here! I have an Enchanted Evening I planted three years ago. The first year produced nice blooms, but it has now dwindled down to just one spindly cane (I now call it Enchanted Stick!). I'm in Vancouver, BC which is wet, so my plants tend to be susceptible to black spot, but a Hot Cocoa I planted at the same time is doing much better.

Can my Enchanted Evening recover? Any suggested strategies? Or should I just rip it out?

There could be a lot of different reasons why your EE isn't thriving. It may have been an unhealthy or weak plant to begin with or it may just not be happy where it is. Or it may not be a rose that is good for your area at all by being too winter tender or by being very susceptible to the particular disease strains where you live.

You could try moving it to a different spot or potting it up to see if it improves but chances are it will never really get much better. I've found that usually by the time they've dwindled down to one cane wonders they never really bounce back.

If possible, I'd find a rose garden somewhere near you and visit that and see which roses are growing well that you like. Or find a rose society near you where you can talk to people who grow a lot of roses in the same conditions you do. Look for roses that do well in your area and you'll probably be much happier with them.

I tossed mine after 2 or 3 years. When I purchased the bush, the blooms were beautiful and very fragrant. My experience was that the bush didn't thrive, blackspot problem, not a lot of blooms, and it took a long time to recycle.

John Moody from Missouri in HMF's comment of Enchanted Evening, stated, "I tried to grow this rose from bareroot the first year it was offered. The bareroot was slow to break dormancy and then it never really grew at all and I don't recall that it even bloomed at all before dying before the Fall of it's first year."
