Can I apply some lime now?

I came back from a long weekend away to find blackspot has come back to my roses. I gave them a good spray last night but am wondering---can I apply some lime around the roots now or would that be too much?

By lime, I assume you mean lime sulfur. So long as you keep it off the foliage, lime sulfur sprayed on the ground around your roses should do no harm and presumably will kill blackspot spores although I don't know that anyone has really demonstrated this as a fact.

Thanks Mike! This isn't a spray, it's granules of lime. I'm assuming those would be okay?

The time to apply lime is after a soil test.

The only purpose of lime is to raise soil pH. Unless you *know* your pH is lower than optimum, there is no reason to even think of using lime.

I've seen no evidence that lime on the soil will affect blackspot. If you apply too much, it can lead to deficiencies in the plant of iron and other nutrients.

If a soil test shows pH of 5.5 or below, then add the recommended amount of lime to correct the acid condition. Ideal pH for roses is around 6.0 to 6.5.
