The picture is of my Henry Hudson. It has grown as you can see in a nice rounded shape. I've been very afraid of pruning it very much because I love the shape. But it needs attention alot of dead wood the last two yrs which has all been cleaned out. But all the canes are old. I'd like to just cut it to the ground and start over in the spring. Just not sure if it would grow in that nice rounded shape again. I have a very small garden, and its eating alot of space. Anyone grow this rose and could help me with what to expect if I do cut it to the ground, or any other suggestions would be great.

Rugosas and hybrids should be fine cutting to the ground. Just make sure it is not grafted onto a different rootstock just in case you cut back all the way to a different rose!

May I ask how large your Henry Hudson is? Looks bigger than I expected. 4x6? I am thinking of getting one but space concerns me. How does it smell? Looks to me like there is lots of open space there to let it grow bigger!

This is a pic in 2008 planted in 2003. Its 6-7 feet tall and 7-8 feet wide now. I thought it would be a small shrub. Grafted on multiflora from pickering.

As you can see I have allot perennials growing. Now that its at the larger size there is no room for other things to grow. Its on the left of this pic...It blooms nonstop all summer.I'm not a big fan of fragrance. It has a slight smell I think.
