| Hi all,
Have a couple of 6 year old Blaze climbers which have been amazing performers but I recently noticed on one almost every stem has canker (one large stem is dead) and the other has signs of the disease also. I suppose I could try cutting both plants about 6" above the union in the fall (if that removes all signs of disease) or should I just remove the plants entirely and put in replacements? Thanks |

| Fungal spores are everywhere, so it is not the right approach to think about sanitizing the garden. Probably the pathogen has been in the Blazes and other roses for years and years. Cankers germinate under very particular weather conditions (generally cool and wet), so you have periodic flareups. Often the rose plant is able to contain the growth of canker lesions so they grow to a certain size and stop without doing further damage. If you are inland (hot and dry), all the current cankers are probably inactive. It's just a spot of dead bark. A traditional rule of thumb is to prune below cankers that have girdled 50% of the diameter, cutting at least 1" below the lesion. |

| Also look at cultural issues: are you watering too much? Is mulch piled deeply around the base of the plant? Is the plant in too much shade? And so on. |
