planted 16 bushes today-rookie mistake

Hello. I planted bushes today on the cusp of Issac's gift of clouds and rain. I think I planted them too high. I mounded them up with soil (like I've seen the winterized with mulch). I'm not sure why I did this. I made little trenches around them about 1 foot off of center. I planted HT's, some FBs and some Austins.
Do I need to replant these *whine*. I hope not.

If you planted now, they were probably canned or recently rooted plants, right? You wouldn't have had bare roots yet. Were they transplants or out of pots? Had you cut them back or were they growing and leafed out?

By "too high", why gives you that idea? Are there roots showing at the soil surface? If budded, had you intended to bury the bud union, or leave it above ground? There is just too much information not given to begin to provide you with any kind of reasonable answer. Perhaps some clear photos of what they are and what you've done might help? But, without knowing answers to the questions above, how would anyone have any idea of what to begin to suggest to you? Kim

LOL... I did that last Fall with my Pickering order (of course they were bareroot)! I had ordered 12-ish bareroot roses and of course, when they arrive, time is of the essance, and you have to get them in the ground ASAP. I sooo regretted ordering so many at once! But, I did it all over again this spring when my order from Palatine arrived. I've sworn not to do it again with bareroots! We'll see...

Been there, done that many times with perennials. I finally learned my lesson which is why I ordered only 2 new roses, plus having no actual space for any others which is a good thing to save me from myself, LOL.

Sorry for not giving more information. They were in 2 gallon pots. Leaved out with new growth...established, blooming bushes. When I say I planted them too high I mean I did not plant the bottom of the bush in the bottom of the hole. There was an inch or two of soil at the bottom of the hole then I put the rootball in (although it wasn't a ball it was the shape of the pot) so that there is much more soil over the plant's root area now than was before. It's mounded up around the bud union.
Picture level ground with a rose bush growing out of the top of a volcano.
I can take some photos but this is the basic profile:
____/\____

Does that make sense?
I was reading in my rose society newsletter that NOW is the time to prepare holes for bareroots planted in the spring.
Now I know why! It was exhausting trying to do all that today. LOL!
Total rookie job.
Thanks.

I have done it because we have rediculous clay soil and it is like digging in concrete. A poster on another forum gave me instructions. It has worked really well all summer long for my hydrangeas (and they are finicky). I did what you did. And mounded with mulch. Over the summer, things have settled in and the shrubs look great. Same deal with Knockout roses; I have several that I cannot keep trimmed.
Your roses may be more finicky. But rather than start over, you could mulch and water well and see how they settle in.

In zone 6 you should be OK not burying the bud union. I never do here. I plant it at ground level so if I decide to winter mulch it will be covered...but I don't always winter protect either. When planting any type of potted plant it's best to plant it at the same depth it is in the pot. So if the bud union was above the soil level in the pot you did the right thing.

The only real issue is protecting the graft. Unlike many plants, roses will adapt quickly to changes of grade.

People in zone 6 may have gone 10 years without zone 6 (subzero) temperatures, but you cannot count on that invariably continuing. I have lost a number of modern roses to winterkill in the past. It could happen again this winter or the next if I leave grafts exposed. I think the grafts should be set just below grade so you don't have to do anything. Or if they are at grade (half exposed), they may be covered easily. But if they are exposed above two or three inches of shank, it takes some effort to be sure they will stay safe. If I had planted some tender roses that high, I would reset them. It would save trouble in the long run.

Ok, thanks Zone 6'ers. I think I'm going to be ok. Graft is just above grade level. I am in the city with a fenced yard and these critters get SW exposure.
Is pine staw a good winter protection or do I need something more like shredded hardwood?
None of the HT's I planted are tender for my zone.

I would just add more soil, compost or mulch round the base. They also may 'sink in' when the soil from the pot settles in the new hole.
