Condesa de Sastago

Does anyone grow Condesa de Sastago? I saw her several years ago when she caught my eye from the street. I parked the car, walked to the curb and looked at the tag -- she was that beautiful! Then, I forgot about her until I saw a photo on Vintage Gardens' main list of HT roses. It has the beautiful color we love in Granada, on a tall vigorous bush.

Just wondering how she does in hot/dry southern California gardens.

In Newhall (91321), she was semi climbing (own root). The color was definitely not the red/yellow combination, but a cupped flower which blew rather quickly in cerise with a buff reverse. I never observed the red/yellow except for very late fall when it was quite cool. Then, the foliage mildewed. I didn't spray. It's one of those Pernetianas which are beautiful when and where they are beautiful, but definitely a "thirty minute rose" as Dr. J. H. Nicholas complained about them nearly 80 years ago. If you want flowers with more lasting power, Granada is your better bet over Sastago. I also grew the yellow sport, Yellow Sastago. It was identical except for color, buff, like the reverses of the original. I rooted mine from June Grose's plant which was original to her 1940s house in Los Angeles. Her across the street neighbor had the climbing sport. Both hers and the climber's flowers blew quickly and seldom showed the bright red/yellow. Kim

Thanks, Kim. I'll press onward and upward for Granada! :)

I think you'll be happier with Granada. Good luck! Kim
