My cousin is getting married in San Francisco and is looking for an outdoor space. Wondering if any of you rose gardeners on the West Coast had some creative suggestions. She's looking on a budget and available for next August. Any ideas? Places that aren't on the standard list? Maybe, parks or botanical gardens? Thanks!

I don't know how expensive it would be or if it's too far from San Francisco for your cousin, but Hakone Gardens, Saratoga, is a wonderful Japanese garden that caters to weddings. Another venue is the Rose Garden in Golden Gate Park. I checked Filoli Gardens website but it doesn't mention weddings. It's a very beautiful place that would make a wonderful setting for a wedding so it's a pity. I live in Sweden and have only spent two months in Palo Alto on two occasions so I am not the right person to recommend anything in the area but I've visited as many gardens as I could and several gardens in Golden Gate Park and Hakone Gardens were some of the most beautiful I have seen.

In addition to the "not good for outside wedding" weather in August (especially in GG Park), please remember that next August THE AMERICA'S CUP will be going on in SF Bay. It will be a zoo. For that reason, I would stay as far away from Alcatraz as possible - it & all of the ferries will be covered with people trying to watch the races. I would look at places in the East Bay (nice suggestions already on the Antique Forum), or down the Penninsula, or in Marin. Stay away from SF and particularly anywhere right on the water of SF Bay. People will be coming here from all over the world for the America's Cup. Jackie

I wasn't going to bring it up since it's a ways north of SF, but seeing as it will be the America's Cup you might want to check out Garden Valley Ranch in Petaluma. It is a really awesome rose garden/nursery that caters specifically to weddings, and Petaluma tends to be one of the cooler parts of the Bay Area during August.

"Alcatraz, Alcatraz, Alcatraz!!!!" That would be my pick. I have a dark and perverse sense of humor. What better place to get married than an inescapable prison? :)

Glad someone got the joke! :^)
