Pink Ebb Tide

I have an Ebb Tide that I bought this spring. It was maybe 6 inches tall at best so it's definitely a baby. The rise came with a note saying that it may bloom more pink-purple than purple until it matures. I thought that meant it would be more of a magenta and they were overall, but then it produced this bloom, right next another bloom that is its version of purple. Is this what I see referred to as a sport? Did this one revert to his parent's bloom color? Thanks for looking. I am sorry the bloom is not prettier - some kind of bug nibbled on it when it was still a bud. Oh, and this is a tiny blossom, maybe as big as my thumb.

That's disappointing. Is this an own root plant? I've grown it budded and own root and it's FAR better (though still not a great plant) budded on Huey. Even budded, it just isn't a strong grower and seems to enjoy not producing new basals to replenish the plant. If it continues flowering that pink color, you may have a sport, but it appears to possibly be heat, immaturity and perhaps nutrient deficient judging by the bloom color. I've never seen one that washed out. It's definitely strange. Kim

Can anyone tell me what the latest and greatest is?
I remember that I used to always hear Photoshop.
Is that still the best?

Kim, I am kind if disappointed. I was really hoping for a nice purple but I have seen much better colors and blooms in pictures on this forum. Much, much prettier. It does smell nice, so there's that. It is on it's own root. It wasn't very hot and was in partial sun. It is in a pot so maybe it is a nutrient issue. I had fertilized it shortly before this set of blooms appeared but maybe they had already formed and I didn't notice them.

I am pretty sure even Photoshop can't help this rose. ;)

It looks like you have a nice purple bloom behind it. This could be a sport, or more likely just a bloom affected by weather or other conditions.

Sorry, couldn't help it.

RE: Pink Ebb Tide

In my thread linked below, I go on and on about how much I like 'Ebb Tide.'

The title of the thread, "Improving Ebb Tide," along with other posts I've made about the rose, explain that I think it needs work or improvement.

I was recently struck by the realization - accurate or not, that 'Ebb Tide' had brought most of the characteristics of 'Sweet Chariot' into a floribunda bush form. IMHO, 'Ebb Tide' is a great example of the work (or art) that rose breeders/hybridizers can do.

I still love it, but hate that it isn't perfect when it comes to health in my location.

It has joined some other roses that I love that survive, but that only sometimes (rarely) look ready to face the public, in an area where public appearances aren't required. Chemical intervention would likely remedy this, but I won't use fungicides.

Since your plant is own root, it will require time (read years) to establish and show you what it can do in your area. Please be aware that variability in color is as much a seasonal (spring, summer, fall) issue as an issue of age.

I keep hoping that in the same way that 'Ebb Tide' takes after its forebear, 'Sweet Chariot,' that a very healthy descendant will be "born" with similar floral characteristics.

It looks like it has a bit of a vegetative center as well. I think it's just an anomaly.

Aberration in development.
