Could it be just ...

... a delayed reaction to the very long ~HEAT~WAVE~ & drought we all experienced? I'm getting some yellowing foliage & a few have spots. Just when the cool-down & only occassional upper 90s these past 2 weeks.

Even if H2O Co. requested voluntary ease of watering lawns, my Roses were watered as needed. They did react a wee bit to the conditions Ma Nature doled out for self-preservation & I helped by pruning (more due to JB invation). Now, after conditions have improved & JBs are just spotted now & again ~ why this yellowing w/ a bit of spots ~ so my question goes:

*Could it be just a delayed reaction?*

TIA for your thoughts!!!

Hi ditas, I'm getting the same thing here in Texas, am attributing it to the hot weather (stress) over the summer, am starting to see buds on these same roses for the fall flush.

RE: Could it be just ...

Same here in California. It was 102 here today (still 87 now at 10:38 PM, which is rare for here) and as hot tomorrow. The foliage is looking really crappy, no matter how much water I put down. Kim

Yup. I have an area of my garden that I call "the jungle" due to several roses being crowded together, and right now I can actually see through it. Normally the foliage is too thick and I have to move branches aside to see the canes beneath. Still in the 90s here, and will be for a while yet. Lots of foliage drop, but it's hot. I tend to drop a few layers when I'm hot too. :)

I'm so glad you started this thread. Just yesterday I was puzzling over a number of my roses along the property line--they suddenly have almost more yellow leaves on them than green leaves. No spots of any kind--just lots of yellow leaves, and suddenly.

We've had somewhat cooler weather for the past week or two--lower 90s or a bit cooler on some days. I'm glad to see some buds forming and some blooms coming back closer to normal size, but was startled to suddenly see so many leaves turn yellow. I assumed it had something to do with the weather patterns and previous heat stress, but I don't really understand why it happens.

Thank you all for responding to our sad puzzelments, but it's the nature of gardening I guess *Ma Nature Rules!* ~ glad to know it's not just my rose bushes & hoping it's really just a delayed reaction!!!

My guys are finally exciting me w/ the very telling burgundy'ish young growths, hopefully replacing the yellowing casualties of heatwave! The cooler nites help surely.

Another sad thing is the noticeably scanty population of butterflies & bees replaced by JB & now yellow Lady bug-like invasions ~ they love the blooms grrr & @#$%$#@)(&% (unprintables)!!! What makes up for me is the growing population of RTHummingbirds w/ these recent cool-down!!!

Better days ahead to us!!!

The common spot diseases don't like really hot weather. Fungi are spreading because it is getting cooler, not because it used to be hot. Yellowing without spots might be caused by heat and drought, however.

Ditas---
Yes, same thing is happening where I am. It was far too hot and arid from around mid-May through the first week and a half of August for the normal disease issues to rear their ugly heads. Throughout that heat wave, it just wasn't dipping below the low 80's at night. If you walked around your lawn in the morning, you'd notice the odd lack of dew on the grass.

Things changed up a bit when the heat wave broke. Nighttime humidity here is back on the rise, we're getting well into the 60-70 degree range overnight, and things are generally sopping wet in the morning. I didn't proactively spray even though I knew a change was coming, and the usual suspects are all looking....suspicious.

I think I have the holy triumvirate of blackspot, anthracnose, and cercospora running rampant at the moment. On the other hand, everything IS showing beatiful new growth. Previously, when I started losing lower leaves during the heat wave, all I had left were green sticks with some foliage at the top 3rd of each cane. It's looking much better now, despite the fungal rampage.

I also have a few roses that had lower leaves turn yellow, crispen, and drop off even though they had sufficient water. I think it's just one of those things where they are trying to cope with rapidly changing conditions and rather harsh/unusual weather this summer.

My roses look a mess too. I know I do have black spot out there but I'm seeing other kinds of damage too I think. I went out and took some pics of the different leaves this morning.

I'm pretty sure this is just BS.
Rose leaf disease

But then there are the ones that are just yellowing and then drying up and turning brown too.

Rose leaf disease

This is poor Rose de Rescht and she's a real mess with this stuff.

Any thoughts?

RE: Could it be just ...

The round black spots with a dot in the middle are likely anthracnose.

Some areas just look burnt -- that's not surprising --

There's some blackspot -- you know, those marks sort of "bleed" at the edges, like a drop of ink on a paper towel.

MIGHT be some downy mildew, but I'd need a better look.

It's all old foliage, that's had some stressful months, and is ready to give up the ghost.

Out here, I'm seeing some touches of powdery mildew, and some rust on old foliage.

Jeri

Awww seil ~ I have just a couple that seems to be going thru like your last pic frame. Rainbow KO & Carefree Sunshine the rest are just the yellowing & perhaps will dry & drop but I'm in the habit of clipping & cleaning them up while am out chasing after JBs w/ peppermint soap spray sol, anyway.

I planted 10 new rose babes (OSO Easy series) last year & have been looking after them a bit closer since they were real li'l babes so I thought cleaning up the clippings of yellowed & spotted foliage will prevent spreading any chance they were fungus ridden. I hope that the new growths are promising!

After getting too engrossed in Hydrangeas for years, I'm getting myself re-educated in Rose (only easy care types) & Clematis growing & care. So much still to learn!!!

Thanks to all contributors to this thread - we're learning from each other!!!

Thanks, Jeri! I really thought that first one was just black spot but now I see it does have a dot in the center. That helps a lot!

I did some leaf picking yesterday too, Ditas. I hate when they look so bad!

Mine look awful too. Not surprising after one of the worst droughts in history. Even though I watered with hose water, there's nothing like golden nectar that falls from the sky. We had months of solid 100+F temps and the leaves looked like crispy critters...all sunburned and sad. Last week, we finally got some much-needed rain and it is amazing at the beautiful new red growth that is pushing upwards.

There is always next year...

RE: Could it be just ...

I see this every late summer, it's as Jeri said, old leaves that are stressed out and done. I've been shaking my rose bushes to get them off. We've had some rain, so it looks like the fall flush will be good. I put down alfalfa pellets last week. We thought we were going to get tons of rain from Issac, but it changed course.

Thanks, Buford. I have been pulling off the worst of the leaves. Now I need to get out and clean up the messy beds, lol!

 o
RE: Could it be just ...

Since I don't see any shot-holes, I'd guess the second disease in Seil's garden (pale dot in center) is probably cercospora rather than anthracnose. The large dead brown areas could be late-stage cercospora infections as well.

 o
RE: Could it be just ...

My Rose de Rescht gets that ugly leaf thing as well. I just cut them off. I spray mine, and there is no black spot at the moment, but I do have those ugly leaves.

Seil...if I did`nt know better, I would say you were taking pictures of my garden roses! What a challenging season this has been. Sometimes I feel like throwing in the towel and planting 140 boxwoods in their places!!! But, the optimist in me took over and I ordered three new roses from Palatine this morning. As Terrijean said.."There`s always next year" I will welcome Annie Laurie, Ascot and another Vetrans Honor to my garden this fall. Lesley

Thanks everyone! I'd never wish diseases like this for anyone but I'm glad to know I'm not alone!

I'm really worried about the spread of RRD ~ the more I read about it ~ are you as well?

I'm so sad for the rose collectors having to demolish many they have cared for & loved for many a long years!!!

Hoping & praying the ill winds don't blow our way, as we watch & wait-out what's w/ this post-odd-season behavior of our lovely ones!

Good wishes!!!
