Hi All! I'm new to roses and I've absolutely fallen in love with them! I live in Vancouver, Canada. I grow all of my roses in pots. I have a Jeanne LaJoie which till a couple of days ago was soooooo healthy, I checked on it yesterday and it had lost quite a few leaves and also had this webbing, like that of a spiders around the leaves? What do you think it is and please help me make my Jeanne healthy again! Many thanks in advance!

It's OK. The webs, and the faded look to the leaves, says your rose has spider mites. Are you using insecticides??? Insecticides don't kill these guys -- they are not insects, but ARACHNIDS. Little spiders. The insecticides only kill the bugs that might have eaten the spider mites. Bummer. SO you need to WASH this rose with a powerful stream of water, SPRAYING the water from UNDER the leaves, because that's where the creepy things are. If your pot is still small enough, you can pick it up, to make washing easier. Do this every other day for a week or so. You will pretty much get rid of the problem. Just one other thing ... I also tried growing Jeanne LaJoie in a little pot, back in 1988 or so. It died. Turns out, JLJ has miniature FLOWERS -- but she makes an immense climbing PLANT. Go to: Your Jeanne LaJoie is going to have to go into the ground eventually. :-) Jeri

If ur interested in spraying try Forbid or Floromite.

Pull off all of the old leaves then wash the foliage every day for three or four days like Jeri said. If you wanted to spray something because spraying would make YOU feel better, you could order a miticide online (you're unlikely to find such a specialty product locally) but you need to start washing the foliage with water immediately. Since it would take a couple of days for the miticide to be delivered, the washing will have cleared up the mites by the time it arrives.
