Palatine roses in Ontario...

Has anyone ever ordered from Palatine Roses? If so, what has been your experience? Good? Bad? Quality of plants? Trying to find a new source for bareroot roses... All the good companies seem to be disappearing! Thanks for any help.

I just ordered my first time from Palantine, so I can't give any input yet. But several members of my rose society have planted roses from there and report that they do very well. There is another thread about recent orders from Palantine.

I ordered 8 on the day they first opened for the season, and added 3 since. For bareroots, they are the go-to place. I especially like their section called "Healthy" roses. This is not to say that those roses would do well anywhere, but they seem to be judicious in selecting roses for that category. Quite a few roses that are described as disease resistant on helpmefind are being offered by them, but are not grouped under the "Healthy" category. I asked the owner about a rose I ordered, and he told me that it is very healthy but they are not ready to tout it as a "Healthy" rose yet because they haven't had it long enough. My impression is that they don't just label a rose healthy to promote sale, and put in great efforts in building trust with customers.

I ordered 15 roses in spring for the first time, after I heard about this place from our rose society members and how pleased they were with the plants.
I was very impressed with the size of the plants and extremely happy with their performance in the first year itself. I really love their plants so I ordered another 10 for this fall. Now I have a lot of digging to do to plant them when they arrive.

I think you will find if you search for "Palatine" in the search box below that Palatine is a highly favored and popular place to order roses from on this forum. They send a good healthy product (the rose) and are gracious and considerate with the customer. I've been ordering from them for several years now and plan to in the future also.

They graft on multiflora. If you want roses grafted on Dr. Huey for some reason, try Regan Nursery. They are excellent also.

If you are looking for Austin roses, you can order directly from David Austin in Texas. Austin sells mostly on Dr. Huey grafts but is increasingly offering more roses own root.

And if you want own root roses, there are several superb places: Roses Unlimited, Chamblees, Angel Gardens, Rogue Valley Roses, The Antique Rose Emporium, . . . .

I'm sure I've omitted someone--but other posters will probably fill in.

Have fun rosing!

I placed an order last year for spring 2014 delivery and received my 3 roses during a very warm part of spring this year, with patches of white fungus. The roses were very moist and the heat allowed the white fungus to form. It washed off easily enough and I soaked the roses overnight, then planted them. The roses all looked healthy with excellent roots and all started to leaf out within the month of planting. I unfortunately chose to use full strength miracle grow and burned all 3, causing them to die (I'm a beginner). I liked the selection and service of palatine so much that I've ordered a second batch, this time of 5 varieties for fall delivery in November. No fertilizer for these roses for a very long time.

I've ordered from them for many years. Very good quality, healthy & large plants. Also their service is excellent. Highly recommend them.

This is my 3rd year ordering from them. They are also my favorite bareroot vendor. Their roses are healthy, top grade, well packaged and never puny. I'm ordering just a few this year - I'm running outta room!

Thanks to everyone for your input on Palatine Roses. I think I've found a new rose vendor. Happy gardening!

I may order from them for 2015 since Pickering is not taking orders this year. When is the best time to make an order?

Three weeks ago (and that is for next spring delivery!)--if you want some of the roses that sold out within 24 hours of the beginning of the 1915 rose season in early September (like I did)!

If they don't run out of the rose you want, you can order into the new year. If I know it's a hard-to-find rose, I order just as soon as I can. Otherwise I usually order sometime between Xmas and New Year.

Good luck.

Palatine Roses, and the family who owns this business, are stars.

I ordered 17 roses from the ever-patient Rachel, changed my order 3 times, got advice 5 times, and was completely over the moon about what was delivered. The roses had the most robust roots I've ever seen, and gave us a summer of perfume and beauty. Actually, they are still going pretty strong here on Vancouver Island.

If you love healthy roses, order them from Rachel and her dad Rene of Palatine roses. Rachel, you are a star :)

What Pauline said about Rachel and Rene! 5 star operation and bare roots without equal from any supplier I've encountered!
