I am looking for red rose for a mass planting that will stay short. Number one consideration is short and compact, no arching, ankle grabbing habits as some "ground cover" varieties are apt to do. Good repeat would be my # 2 concern, and it must be hardy. USDA says I am in 5B but I find that roses rated to zone 6 do just fine in my garden. I would prefer something available grafted but a vigorous, hardy own root is OK. Any shade of red is fine. Showbiz and Trumpeter look like possibilities. Could anyone who grows these offer their opinions? What are some other of your short red (or reddish) favorites? I already have Lavaglut and Munstead Wood planted elsewhere, and they are both wonderful but I'd like something new. Thanks!

How tall is "short"? I have Home Run and it gets about 3 to 3 1/2 feet tall. It's nearly always in bloom, has excellent black spot resistance and is very hardy. It has a nice bushy growth habit and would be ideal for a short hedge or mass planting.

I think Home Run would be a great one too. One that I have and like really well is Drop Dead Red. It is very uniform looking and repeats quickly. HMF says it gets about 30 to 35 inches tall. I noticed it is available from Palatine

Don't know if this will help but I am going to plant Darcy Bussell best spring for a short red in front of one of my beds. I have heard good things about it being compact and bushy and a reliable rebloomer.

A second vote for Darcy B. It has far better growth habit and is far more BS resistant than mustead wood. Far less thorny too. They have stayed compact after 4 years here in northern nj It is not true red though, depending on the weather, it is deep pink or deep purple.

Such good suggestions! It's great to get the experience of others. As you know HMF can be a big help but sometimes a rose just doesn't have reviews and comments. The height info provided by vendors is completely unreliable. As for how short - I'd say the shorter the better. These will be the front row of a semi-circle, and behind in the center I will plant something taller. No idea what the taller variety will be, that all depends on the red row. Regarding color, not-quite "true" red is fine. Anything reddish will do. My husband likes red, I like variety. farmerduck, I can relate to what you say about Munstead Wood. Mine are getting pretty leggy in their second year, quite a thorny-grabby rose. Gorgeous blooms though.

Rouge Royale stays at just over 3 ft tall here.

Janice Kellog stays pretty short for me. Rated for zone 6. It doesn't always have the same tone in my observance. When I first bought it, there was a gradient red and black picotee to it. Currently more on the hot pink side.
