Rosa Rugosa-- not many blooms

Hi there,

I planted some pink and white rosa rugosa in my south-facing not very sunny garden two summers ago-- this is their third summer. I live at the base of a hill, so unfortunately this is my most sunny garden spot! Every winter I prune the tops of the plants on an even plane to encourage them to widen out. However, there are few blooms that happen for 2-3 weeks in the summer and then they are gone. There is a William Baffin climbing rose in the same location that seems to do better-- I haven't pruned this one since the first winter. I saw a rosa rugosa one town over this week and it still has a few blooms! My plants haven't bloomed for over a month and a half. Is my pruning of the rose rugosa preventing more flowering? Is it the location? The pH of the soil is around 7.

Thanks!
