I can't stop buying roses. Can anyone offer wisdom, experience or hope? YIKES.

Nope, I'm sorry, but really can't! It's an addiction, but perhaps when you run out of room you'll think about it a little more; then again, you may be like me and decide there's GOT to be a spot it will fit, lol!

Take up knitting. Your rose money will be spent on yarn instead. You'll be really warm, though.

Move to an area with heavy red clay soil like where I live. It takes forever to dig a hole 2 1/2ft by 2 1/2 feet, then I still have to amend the soil. My limit has been four every spring. I could go to pots, but living in a warm climate I feel like I wouldn't faithfully water them enough!

rogue valley has some really nice free ones when you buy a few. Not yucky ones no one wants...the free roses are yummy. Hope this helps save you some $$. I know you were going to get at least one of the varieties on the free list anyway :)

Lol, it eventually slows down. You get to a point where you either have no room left or no energy!

Move to black spot country - like the Pacific North West.

I can't help you either. I have about 25 roses and just bought 4 more and have several more planned for the near future. You're on your own!

There is no cure.

RE: I have a problem

There IS a cure. Rising water bills; rising summer temperatures; increasing battles with vermin who are hades-bent upon killing everything you plant; and your choice not to be a labor slave to your "past time". I consciously place it back to a "past time", instead of the emergency, immediate chore it's become. 30 from the pot ghetto just literally became "mulch". More are soon to follow....Kim

Yep, There is (a cure) but you don't really want to hear that just yet, do you? You are still in the honeymoon period of first love and aquisition. For the first few years, you will just have to go through the process (and you are in company with some outrageous addicts here who are no help at all). Even so, most of us reach an equilibrium where we can manage the ones we have - although most of us succumb to a sort of madness - my particular curses are large roses in a small space. There are only so many angels that can balance on the head of a pin and the same limits apply to roses. And there is the watering, and the pests and the care of (that sick guilt as you pass yet another rose which has almost dissappeared under a heap of weeds). Still, everyone has to find their own limits (mine stands at about 115 roses and far too many other plants in various locations). It's a love affair - some of us get lucky and have a golden wedding, some of us get the divorce papers after a couple of years......but generally, we all have a lot of fun before the demands of reality (space, time and money)kick in. This is a trip you may as well enjoy because you have already bought the bus tickets.

Here's how I solved it..I get a few bands every year and raise them as potted plants. I have space for around 2 doz. pots so when they get to be between 5 and 15 gallon size I evaluate my garden. The roses that are not growing well get dug out in January and sold at a garden/ yard sale during the spring flush. They look the best then and always find homes. Every year I have different roses up for sale and so people come back to see what's new. The plants usually look better than what's at the nursery.

It's fun to have a mixed group growing. Bands, small potted roses, great big pots and plants in the ground. Enough variety to keep you busy in the garden. Also some bands aren't going to be compatible with your climate but you have to try them to know for sure. I buy mostly from the growers closest to me to save on shipping costs.

The phase you are in is such a joyous time. Indulge, love every second of it. Life does unfold to each of us in its own way. You will find yourself at points, faced with checks and measures which will have you reflecting on your quantities, and only you can decide when or if enough is enough. That is in the future. Flourish in the now.

I like harmony's advice. That's the way to do it!

Sage advice from all. I joyously allow my rose garden to unfold and strive to remain in my present state of punchdrunk infatuation knowing that change is inevitable.
