Hi, I planted two St. Patrick's bushes last spring, and so far I have been disappointed. They put out a lot of buds, but the flowers never open completely, and I have had some balling this summer, even in periods of drought. I heard they were the best yellow roses for hot climates, but they have not been pretty bushes for me. Perhaps they like heat but not humidity. I am in central Alabama. Anyone else have a similar experience?

FWIW, 'St. Patrick' was bred in inland Southern California. So -- she did indeed first show her lovely self in a climate that had hot, dry summers, and mild winters. Jeri

St. Pat has pretty thin petals and if you have any humidity it can ball just like a lot of the white ones do. I have no idea how people in my rose society manage to grow it here in humid central but they do. It was terrible for me and I ditched it. Look for a yellow with more substantial petals and it may do better for you. My cousin has Midas Touch and it opens fine for her. The only yellow HT I have now is Valencia which is lovely but not that clear yellow color. It's sort of a more orangey/golden yellow.

Thanks Jerijen and Seil, maybe they will perform better in October, but I think they may get shovel pruned. We live and learn. There are just too many other beautiful roses out there that might do better.

I'm from KY and grow St. Patrick. I love the blooms. My problem is that it doesn't winter well. You may want to give it one more season. Sometimes I'll be ready to SP a rose and then change my mind. Then I have been pleased with its performance the next year. Each year the seasons can be different and the rose will have matured another year. Ballers are at the top of my list for shovel pruning!

I grew St. Patrick in the past, we've moved a few times and it was always a favorite of mine here in So Cal. My husband is a huge fan so we plan on getting a new one soon. Maybe she just needs sometime to get established? Some roses are picky about where they are growing in your yard. Occasionally a change of location makes a world of difference. I'm unsure of your watering techniques but, sometimes how you water will effect blooms, especially in humidity it might be best to water only the base. Hopefully St Patrick will turn around for you, it really is a amazing rose-if it's behaving! Good Luck, Carlota

The best flowers I ever had with st. Parick came during November. I thought it was ugly most of the time and replaced it with eternal flame, which I haven't regretted at all.

Mine was planted last year and did well. This year it started out with balling blooms and the foliage was ugly. For the last few months it's done very well.

If yours is like mine, go and stand next to it with the loppers and shovel and tell it to shape up or your coming for it. That seems to have helped mine decide to grow and bloom. But I am going to move it so it is spared the green waste bin.

FWIW, I purchased a st Patrick rose early this spring and it balled early on, but for some reason when august and the temps got in the high 90s they stopped balling. I think it may have been too much rain in the spring. It is a beautiful rose and lasts a loooooong time in the vase. A suggestion is to cutthe flowers just as they are starting to bloom . We are hot and humid in baton rouge and it rains at least once a week, but I think it rained more often in the spring. Maybe just give it some more time? It is very leggy right now, not the best looking bush, but no BS and gorgeous full blooms.

I grew St. Patrick in Fl. for several years. During the first two years I let the bush grow and get some good size under it. Enjoyed the blooms but just deadheaded it during that time. During it's 3rd year it went crazy. 46 blooms on long cutting stems during the spring flush and just kept going all season long. I don't grow it up here because it is winter tender and I don't go to extreme measures to winter protect. But if you can give it a couple of years to grow a bush under itself, usually the 3 rd year is the charm for this bush.

I had St. Patrick. It was one of my favorites. I never had a balling problem, the blooms would open, but not fully. But as Ken said, you could have 2 dozen or more long stem blooms on one bush at a time. I once was able to cut a very nice dozen and bring them in the house. Mine had gall and I had to dig it up. I would like to replace it.

Ok, after these mixed reviews, I have decided to keep mine for a while longer and give them a chance. I actually have a few blooms now that did not ball. They are small but the form is perfect. I think they are liking the milder temps we are finally starting to have. I am going to see what October brings. Jim, you can tell the grim reaper to go away. :-)Thanks everyone!
