| There is a cute (if profane) YouTube video on the Honey Badger - nature's toughest critter. I was thinking now that it's getting to the end of summer, what were your Honey Badger roses this summer? Here's the criteria: you left for four weeks - during scorching heat - and there was no rain. When you came back, which rose(s)would still be blooming, healthy, and, well, a Honey Badger.
Mine would be - and were:
Carefree Sunshine
Carefree Delight
Carefree Beauty (is there a carefree theme here?)
Robusta
Caldwell Pink
Crimson Bouquet
IHT
Mountain Mignonette
Jeannie Lajoie
Belinda's Dream

| Vineyard song is really a nice plant here. I'm assuming you're more of a desert climate? It doesn't suffer either either of our two big "issues" here: blackspot and mildew. I'm bordering on 7a/6b and its gotten to only 3-ish feet over the past couple of years. It also does very nice ownroot here...its out growing many of its grafted neighbors :) Tammy |

Hi pt, I don't think anything would even be alive in my garden without the drip system for four weeks! Maybe some trees. I must have wimp plants. Diane Hope you've had a great summer. You must have had a fabulous vacation. |

| Oops, pt, I forgot to mention that we had (or maybe still have) a badger who lived just a few feet from the edge of our back yard where it begins to slope down to the draw behind us. He cleared out every varmint out back for several years, and was the scourge of all gophers. I could see his diggings just down the slope, but he never damaged a thing in my flower beds. He'd come up to the edge of the yard, and we saw him several times. He had those mean glaring eyes, but I still liked him. We had no gopher damage at all during those years, but I'm afraid he might be gone. In early March, a gopher wiped out my Young Lycidas, and the voles are out in force. I want our badger back! sheesh - a bit different to our brocks in the UK (although the fierce teeth are familiar) Can't help with the roses since I have never in my life experienced scorching heat for a month without water, and neither have my roses. Suspect everything (including myself) would be dead. Mr.Campanula, who has spent an inordinate amount of time watching children's TV with the infant, seemed to know the entire history of this mean looking beastie and was keen on a round of shark v lion, bear v rhino etc. (you must have played this at school, imaginary wars in the animal kingdom). |

| Wish I had a Badger....A gopher has done a whole lot of damage this summer in my garden! As if the scorching heat and lack of rain was not enough!! Here`s to a pleasant fall bloom! Lesley |

| Thanks, Tammy. That's a nice size - and I have just the spot. Diane - I wish it was a vacation, but unfortunately it was work. It's a mad scramble these days, and I was chasing work in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and N. Dakota. If you'd like, drop down the hill and come pick up one of my badgers! They are all over the place and on occasion sneak into the pasture and dig a hole you could hide a Volkswagen in. The voles have been bad this year - until the weasels, coyotes, and owls figured out the easy pickings (although the in-house dogs wake up the world when a coyote wanders into the front yard). |

| Some critter has decided to eliminate the vole population in my yard. Again. This happened last year when I was over-run with voles, and had lost several prized plants including roses to them. I had just begun to see evidence of voles presence again, when the Critter's work became evident. It digs pretty thoroughly around but has never dug up or damaged any of my plants. We think it is a big raccoon that has been hanging around here. Whatever it is has done a super job of vole control again and I love it. kay |

pt,we're also having awful vole problems, too, so I'll take you up on your offer of a badger, but would you mind bringing it up the hill for me-heehee? I'll even trade you a couple of foxes which seem to have wiped the resident pygmy rabbits we've had around for years--until this year. It's a bit unnerving to watch a fox nonchalantly trot up the sidewalk as if he owned the place. I'm sorry you didn't have a vacation, but worked instead. Still, traveling to all those states sounds fascinating. Kay, I think you have a badger, not a big raccoon. You are lucky! Diane |
