Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

I'd like a rose that lasts more than 3 days in a vase, 5+ days would be ideal.

I love giving bouquets to my friends and would like to give them roses that last longer than what I presently grow.
Presently I grow mostly Old Garden Tea roses, which are beautiful and bloom nearly all year where I live, but I believe they at least partially win their appearance of "exquisite delicacy" as an author wrote, at the price of having less petal substance, or thickness which adds to the number of days a rose blossom survives in a vase.

The 3 colors I'm most interested in are: white, yellow, and purple hues.

My mom gave me a rosebush named "Tournament of Roses' and the blooms lasted more than a week in a vase, even in hot weather, but it has no or little scent.

Thanks so much,

Luxrosa

This is a great question, since the two qualities seem not very compatible for some genetic reason. I look forward to seeing the responses. Many fragrant hybrid teas are good for four days, maybe five. The best I can think of is 'Valencia', which is fairly fragrant and can last up to a week, It is a huge, sumptuous flower, tawny yellow. Among whites, I wonder if anyone has counted vase days for 'Bolero', which is very fragrant and seems to last a while on the bush. 'Angel Face' is a pretty good keeper if you cut tulip-shaped buds before the petals start to separate.

I grow roses just for cutting, from my very limited experience (I only have 20 varieties ), among garden roses, the best one I have is Honor, it has a light but very delightful/elegant scent. I love it because it lasts 5 days in the vase and opens completely--exquisite beauty. Although I don't think it can last more than 5-6 days in the vase.

For whatever it's worth, I can tell you which ones to avoid, even though you may see them labeled as "good cut" somewhere: Eiffel Tower, Chrysler Imperial, New Zealand, Queen Elizabeth, Peace, Clair Renaissance.

Good luck with your search. Let us know if you find a good one.

'Firefighter'. No, it is not the most beautiful red rose available. But it is beautiful, and the scent is powerful until the flower falls apart.

Purple: Melody parfumee.

It is my darkest purple and has the strongest scent so far. Very strong petals that are wonderful in potpourri after a long life in the vase (5 days + for me in the heat).

Thanks everyone,
My neighbor has a 'Valencia' and it is good for cutting, I have several pale yellow Old Roses in lemony hues, but 'Valencia' is just too darn sumptuous to overlook. I do feel like I'm viewing sunshine drenched walls in Spain when I look at it. If its' patent has expired I'll take cuttings this winter.
That's a gorgeous photo of Pope J.2, I may need to buy one of those.
'Melody P. didn't survive in our Oakland garden for some reason, and now that I'm remembering mauve roses, 'Intrigue' which has a wonderfully rich, penetrating and refreshing scent of citrus and roses, lasts a few days in hot weather here, c. 4 days in the vase, compared to the usual 3 days for H.T.s and H.P.s.

I hope more folks respond to my query. .
thanks again,
Lux.

There is one I have that is very fragrant and sometimes has a purplish cast to it, depending on the weather, it is called Buxom Beauty, it lasts several days in the vase. There are times when the color is almost too much though. The yellow floribunda Sunsprite has a nice fragrance and makes a good cut rose too.

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

Fragrant Cloud. I had a bunch that I cut and had in the house and the fragrance was amazing. They do blouse out a bit, but will last 4-5 days. Same with Double Delight and Mr. Lincoln. If you bring them in right before they open, you will get the maximum time in the vase. Also, with DD, inside it will not get as red and will stay white with just a blush at the edge of the petals.

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

I was told PJPII doesn't have good stems for cutting.

K&M Roses offers a bunch of florist varieties, some of them are said to be very fragrant: Valencia, Germiston Gold, Santa Fe.

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

Rosy, I am thinking of getting some roses from K&M, do you order from them? I think I might take a drive out there to get some roses. Since they are on fort, they aren't sold bare root.

Another thing to consider when cutting flowers, make sure the roses get 'conditioned' when you bring them in. Recut them under warm water and leave in warm water for an hour. Then you can move them to a vase with some type of water conditioner (I like the MG for cut flowers in a little pump bottle). You can even put them in the fridge at night to keep them even longer. That is how the exhibitors do it.

Veterans' Honor will last for way more than 5 days but, alas, no fragrance.

PJPII is a good sturdy one in a vase too and it does have a good fragrance. It was a really poor grower and bloomer for me though.

I'm in a different zone, but of the 100 or so roses I have, the fragrant, long-lasting, cut-flower winner is Fredric Mistral.

'Frederic Mistral' is an excellent suggestion, more fragrant than 'Valencia'. However, be warned that it is literally twice the size of the usual HT plant. Mine also tends to make excessive vegetative growth in the fall--6' laterals that don't always set buds.

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

A vote for Broceliande. A striped super fragrant red. Prolific constant bloom and long vase life. All my garden visitors love it. Will shoot laterals from bent canes. Very modern tho. Got mine from Palatine.

I have a Buck rose called Quietness that not only lasts 5 to 7 days in a vase, but she also has a long lasting scent. Some of my other roses not only last just a few days, but they seem to loose their fragrance once they are brought into the house. I am hoping some of the other suggestions you are receiving will help me find some other good choices for my vases that will also smell great.

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

I cut a 'Bolero' for this thread. It has lasted six full days but will probably be finished by this PM. It was an attractive bud for three days and a 3" open flower for three more. It has the very double form of European OGR. The bud is pure white and the opening center blushed. Fragrance is good once the flower starts to open.

This rose drops its sepals early, so wait until the bud expands and turns white, and cut as the outer petals just start to loosen. To get vase life out of very double roses, you generally need to cut them early in tight bud. They open more easily than you would think.

This is a good rose with a low, spreading habit and some resistance to blackspot and cercospora. (Can't say about mildew and rust.) It reminds me a little of 'Souvenir de la Malmaison', but the flower is not quite so large and perfect.

A HT most folks don't really know about is Louise Estes. Big beautiful white with deep pink edges. Smells great and last 5+ days in a vase with no problems. When folks visit my garden everyone "ohh's and ahh's" over the oranges, dark reds and white's but when they get to Louise Estes, I always hear "Dear Lord, that's a beautiful rose and it smells great also."

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

Susan - I've ordered Broceliande from Palantine for next spring. I'm excited to hear your comments on it!!! YAY!!!

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

My vote on this one would go to Sugar Moon, if I could only pick one. And then also to the oldie/goodie Double Delight. And then also Lasting Love and Melody Parfumee and Neptune and Memorial Day and Chandos Beauty -- so there's something commercially available that meets the great fragrance/good vase life criteria in every color class, except maybe yellow -- haven't found that great yellow fragrant rose yet (still trying).

Finally, I'm going to second whoever voted for Honor, with a caveat. Honor is NOT smelly on the plant. BUT, when cut, it seems to develop a lovely fragrance in a vase when indoors, but only AFTER it is cut does that fragrance emerge. Strange rose, that way.

 o
RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

The Bolero described above made it a full 7 days.

 o
RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

Here's my fragrant roses for the vase:
PJPII, Beverly, Sweetness (grandiflora), Pink Enchantment, Stainless Steel, Neptune, Buxom Beauty, Scentimental (floribunda), Granada, Blue Girl, and Sweet Arlene (mini/flora). Scentimental and Beverly has a shorter vase life. I cut them when they are more budlike and place them in the outer part of my arrangement for easy removal.

 o
RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

Buford, no I haven't bought from K&M yet, I was very tempted, however the 4 plant minimum per order is a bit out of my league this year as I have already placed two orders of 8 plants elsewhere.

RU has Valencia and Hot Princess for next srping. They might have even more florist roses that aren't listed, I was told it wouldn't hurt to ask.

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

My favorite fragrant rose is Bella Roma! It lasts 5 days for me.

kstrong, about fragrant yellow roses;
I have a yellow "Summer Sunshine"; a yellow H.T. from the 1960's that is listed in the vintagegardens "Book of Roses" as being very fragrant ( 4X f's out of 4). Mine lasts 6 days on the bush or in the vase when the day temperature is in the high 80's F. but so far it has developed no scent at all.
I have seen, 3 times (smelled rather) 3 different rosebush cultivars, that had no scent, that later, in 3-4 years, developed a strong scent.
and have heard from a rosarian that some rosebushes need a few years to develop their full scent in the blooms. My neighbor had a 'Secret' that had no scent at all to anyone who smelled it, and then, Voilla! in its 3rd or fourth year in the garden it developed a strong sweet scent, that was reliable in different weather and temperatures.
So I'm still hoping that my 'Summer Sunshine' will eventually be that very fragrant unfading yellow rose that lasts almost a week in a vase. Its' patent date has expired, so if it does finally turn out to be my dream of a yellow rose I could offer cuttings to others.

RE: Fragrant rose with longest vase life?

I am excited for this thread as the colors you listed as being interested in mirror my own. I must vouch for Honey Bouquet in that it's blooms are deliciously fragrant and will last a very long time in the vase and on the bush. Mine is still a young plant, I received her as a band in May, but she is already putting out 4 inch wide blooms that hang on the plant for weeks. I haven't done much cutting, since she is so young, but the few that I have cut have lasted 4-5 days, much longer than all the other equally young roses that were the bouquets with them. I must mention too that so far she is absolutely spotless in my no-spray garden here in blackspotville. She is quickly becoming my favorite yellow modern rose.

Jessica.
