Help with rose suckers

I have several rose trees that have branches with 7 leaves and lots of blooms. But they are not coming below the bud union. The stems are light green. I have the same problems with my shrub roses. They suddenly have a very long stem loaded with losts of blooms; but none on the rest of the bush. Are these suckers? Is it true that suckers ALWAYS have 7 leaves. If so, then I would just remove all stems with 7 leaves.

No, conie it is NOT true that all 7 leafed roses are suckers! Suckers normally come from below the ground, it is interesting that you have growth above the bud union on your tree roses - normally, I would say those were not suckers, but I am not an expert.

Perhaps if you give more info someone here will be able to help you:

1) Do you know the name of the tree rose you bought?
2) What color are the flowers normally?
3) You say that the canes with the 7 leaflets have "lots of bloom". What color are those flowers? Are they the same or different from the original ones?
4) Same questions for the new canes on your shrub roses - are the new blooms a different color than those of the original shrub rose?

If you could post pictures of any of this, that would help a lot.

The blooms are all red. The rose trees and the shrub roses are Red Carpet rose.

I thought that there should always be 5 leaflets on leafs; but I have been searching internet and I am now told that there can be 7 leaflets. So perhaps they are not suckers after all. Which is true. Can a good branch have leafs with 7 leaflets?

Yes, a "good branch" can most-definitely have 7-leaflet leaves.

I'm sorry, but I cannot tell you what Red Carpet roses have. If no one here is familiar with it, perhaps you can find one growing in a pot at a nursery, and check the foliage.
