Rose ID?

I picked up this rose as a one gallon from a nearby nursery a couple of weeks ago. It is from an unidentified rose a customer contributed and just being called the customer's name for the time being. I would love to have an ID to help with placement before I plant her, and hoping someone here will recognize the rose. Some of the buds have started out dark pink and some dark coral red with a bit of gold at the base. They open to a beautiful medium sized bloom of varying shades of pink and salmon with some golden apricot shading at the center. Blooms are at least as deep as they are wide, highly fragrant and long lasting. Leaves are rather small and shiny, new growth bright green, not many prickles so far, some blackspot on older growth (the nursery doesn't spray) that hopefully it will outgrow. Any guesses would be appreciated. TIA

RE: Rose ID?

Kinda reminds me of my Princess Alexandra of Kent. I'm not home to compare but the couple of blooms I have now remind me of it. Whatever it is it's beautiful!!! Good luck! Judy.

Pat, your rose looks & sounds like Boerner's 1949 Aloha to me. An ownroot gallon came here 6 years ago & was the spitting image of yours at that age. It showed a touch of blackspot its first year, but not since, and I don't treat or spray. Now it's a graceful bush easily 7+ feet wide & tall. Its willingness to bloom often & generously, along with its health, is impressive - a happy rose here. And those blooms! All I'd hoped for from the descriptions in the midcentury rose books that convinced me I wanted her years ago, a delight in every way.

Judy and VaSue, Thanks so much for your help!
Princess Alexandria of Kent was new for me this year, so still too immature to be sure, but I don't think it is the same as my mystery rose. I looked at the HMF pictures of Aloha and some are very similar to mine. I think that may be it. I was hoping this wouldn't be a huge rose, but Aloha does sound like a wonderful one, so I will find a place for it to shine.
Thanks again!

Austin's used Aloha in his breeding. Barbara Lea Taylor notes it was to "increase vigor and a free-flowering habit" in the link below, but I suspect he was also after the old-fashioned, sometimes quartered form of its flowers & that great perfume. (Still carries Aloha on his websites.) As much as I admire Austin's roses, including several that are happy here, must say I adore Aloha. Abraham Darby resulted from Aloha x Yellow Cushion & the family resemblance is striking - too bad Abe didn't inherit Aloha's sturdy constitution! Princess Alexandra of Kent is only listed as seedling x seedling, but may indeed have Aloha in her background...

Although Aloha is on the tall & wide side, I don't think of her as a huge rose. Really quite graceful & well-behaved here, gently arching high & flowering from laterals in clusters as she matures. Not even tip die-back down to 7 below one year nor after last year's extended bitter cold. Merely snap the spent blooms & have never pruned her. Last year a butterfly bush in a large pot was parked near her to overwinter. An ice storm followed by heavy snow which froze in turn weighed down the buddleia's branches till they draped over half of Aloha's, taking them near horizontal. Worried she would break, decided to leave them both be for fear or doing more damage trying to undo the situation. As the snow & underlying ice melted away, the canes of both returned to their previous posture without damage. Impressive flexibility in my book.

Alohas's in a mixed perennial bed across from her apricot sport Dixieland Linda/Lady Ashe, and doesn't seem to mind the flowers at her feet. You're most welcome, Pat. Hope you come to love her as much as I do!

Judy, My PAK was a clearance rose leftover from last year with some pretty bad winter damage, so it has taken her a while to recover. She has started to give me some very nice blooms recently, though. Glad to hear she's a good one for you!
VaSue, Thanks so much for the info on Aloha! She's so pretty and smelly that I had hoped to put her front and center in a prime spot I have open...but that rose will need to stay 4 x 4 or smaller. I am planning to remove several of my more BS prone HTs, though, so sounds like she will be better in one of those spots...or maybe I'll finally add an archway I've been wanting and showcase her on that :)

Pat - it does remind me of Aloha too, although the color looks richer than mine. it's a good rose, I love mine.

Another picture of Aloha

RE: Rose ID?

Hey Sara Ann,
When VaSue first suggested Aloha, I thought I remembered that you grew it...but then questioned myself on whether is was Aloha or America that you have (or maybe both). Your pictures are beautiful! So far, mine does open with much stronger coloring than a lot of the pictures on HMF and the bloom form looks different in some pictures, but then there are some posted that are the spitting image of mine and a bud photo that looks identical, as well. I'm excited now and really hope my rose is Aloha.

RE: Rose ID?

Pat - Rose colors can vary so much, that it is difficult to be absolutely certain. I couldn't find pics that I had taken of any, but I have had blooms close to the color and shape of your first two pictures. The unopened bud shape also looks the same. Mine aren't always fragrant, but when they are, it has one of my favorite rose scents. And I do have both Aloha and America.

RE: Rose ID?

Pat - I took this picture this morning. Even though it's still a lighter shade, I think it shows more of the coloring I see in yours.

RE: Rose ID?

Sara Ann,
You're so sweet to post another pic for me! That one looks almost exactly the color of the blooms that I initially posted now that they have aged some. They have that almost lavender hue that lower petals are showing in your latest picture. I think we have another rose in common now :)

RE: Rose ID?

Perhaps it is The Endeavor (Ausdisco), a David Austin rose shown in the current catalog.
