| Does or has anyone grown Peter Mayle in Northern Ca? As HelpMeFind claims that the rose is shade tolerant, I'm considering purchasing the rose for a spot that gets about 5 to 6 hours of sun. If anyone has grown it, especially in No Ca, I'm curious about the rose's growth habit. Is it the typical hybrid tea growth? Is it susceptible to mildew and rust?
Thanks,

Not in CA, but I really like this rose...bought it twice. It loves heat and is a little tender in winter. Mine do well in strong after-ten o'clock sun. Big heavily-petalled, fragrant blooms. A new favorite for me. Laura, who cannot change her screen name without a new email...

I'm not in CA either, but if it helps, I grow three Peter Mayle's in all morning shade. Sun hits them about noon--and that western late afternoon sun can be a heat killer, but Peter Mayle does fine in the heat, although he and the rest of my garden kinda gave up blooming after a long summer with over 100 degree heat for the entire summer! My experience with PM is that he is narrower and more vertical than any of my other HTs. He is also a bit taller than most of mine--he might get quite tall in your California growing conditions. He also has killer thorns. But wait til you see those big fat hot pink blooms--wowsers! And fragrance--double wowsers! No mildew or rust problems here, but that doesn't mean much since they are almost non-existent here. BS is our headache--Peter is good on BS resistance--not excellent, but good, if that helps. Hope you get some CA responses, especially on disease, and that the news is good. I really, really like my Peter Mayles. Kate

No mildew here, and better than average on Rust. The very similar 'Rose Rhapsody' has outstanding Rust resistance and no mildew, but the fragrance isn't as good.

Thanks so much for the information on Peter Mayle and Rose Rhapsody. I'm still thinking about what to put in that spot and would prefer ordering own root from a nursery in CA or Oregon. Plenty of time to ponder my choices before the annual winter moving of the roses. Karen

I'm in zone 8 California. What others have said is my experience. It is disease resistant, tall and upright. I find it blooms shyly in the summer. Rose Rhapsody has beautiful blooms and blooms better than Peter Mayle in the summer. It gets more disease and the disease dosen't look well on its large leaves. I still feel it is worthwhile.
