Where to Buy not Common Roses?

I have seen beth (NorCA) and others posted such beautiful roses like Hocus Pocus, Abracadabra, exhibit roses, etc. and wonder where do you buy such roses?

One of the roses I would like to grow is Black Magic and I ordered two from J&P as bare root early this year and figured if one died, I still had one as backup. Unfortunately, both of them and another rose from J&P didn't break dormancy. I looked online and found many who ordered from J&P also had similar problem. Someone mentioned that because the roots had already been dead, even though the top branches were green, the branches would just slowly turn black and the plants never broke dormancy.

J&P gave me the store credits for the roses. However, since it is a serious issue with bare root roses order of this year, I wonder if they have investigated the causes and corrected it so it won't happen again. Gardening is such a nice hobby that I wouldn't want to see the rose nurseries losing money on the dead roses and the disappointments from gardeners.

The website helpmefind sometimes has information on vendors. Just type in the rose name and click on the "member comments" and "buy from" tabs.

My newbie's guess is that some uncommon roses are uncommon because they are dogs as garden plants, but I have no personal experience with the few roses you listed.

A lot of posters have been growing roses for many years, and we have seen vendors come and go. Many of the "unique" roses came from vendors that are no longer in business, such as Carlton Roses, who used to sell hybrid teas and grandifloras used in the florist trade. You will have to research, or if you see a non-patented rose that someone has, and you can't find a vendor, ask the person if they would be willing to provide you with cuttings, and learn to propagate.

Try places like Roses Unlimited.

Heirloom Roses has a wide selection of bands. I placed an order in May. Mine were all very healthy and have at least doubled in size. I highly recommend them!

That said, many of the older Hybrid Tea Roses do NOT grow well on their own roots. They were bred and released to be grown as budded to a vigorous rootstock.

As the trend will be, more and more, to own-root production, some of those roses will probably be grown only by collectors, or as custom-budded, by nurseries such as Burlington Rose Nursery.

In the case of your 'Black Magic,' there are a good many sources listed on HelpMeFind. If I wanted a rose badly, I'd go right down the list, and check with all of them.

If that didn't pay off, I'd get one from Heirloom, on its own roots. Then, I'd contact Burlington, about custom budding.

Thank you for all the responses. I will try them out. I looked up through HelpMeFind many times for vendors before but I don't think their list is up-to-date. I checked out their listed vendors but they don't carry the roses that they were listed under.
