Anyone Growing Powerhouse?

Saw this beautiful orange/red in J&P catalog and wondered if anyone has any experience with it. In particular how it does in the heat and if it is colorfast. The color reminds me a bit of Dolly Parton. Any information will be welcomed....Maryl

Mary...

Just a heads-up. Powerhouse is not a hybrid tea. It was registered with the ARS and patented in the US as a miniflora.

The bloom form has the hybrid tea shape, but the blooms and the plant is smaller that what we think of as hybrid tea roses.

I'm aware that it's a miniflora. I thought more people might respond on this forum then on the mini forum which is rather slow moving at best. Thanks for the response though. Others might not have known that.....Maryl

Maryl ... thanks for the polite reply.

It gripes me that the new owners are continuing to put up misinformation about the roses they are selling under what was a once respected brand name.

In previous years, they renamed roses that had been previously introduced calling them NEW introductions and gave those roses breeder codes that did not belong to the previously introduced roses, but breeder codes for other roses and patent numbers for roses that were for another previously introduced rose that didn't even belong to the breeder code for the rose they were using for their new introductions.

Now, they are changing the class of the roses they are introducing. So many people will trust the brand name and, in my view, be cheated because the rose they are buying cannot meet their expectations.

It's as Jeri said, "We are entering the dark ages of roses." and it truly makes me incredibly sad.

Smiles,
Lyn

Lyn, I was burning when I saw all of the Benardella roses with the wrong classification in the J&P catalog. Grrrrr.

Maryl, it seems to hold color very well, the ones that I have seen are a little darker than DP in color, more red, less orange. Need treatment for blackspot (as you probably have guessed). Beautiful form, I hope to see a few tomorrow at our show.

I understand your dismay Lyn. I don't know if the 2013 J&P catalog will continue with the misclassification or will make amends. The confusing use of rose names is certainly not limited to J&P. For instance, Kordes has Aloha the climber which is a different rose (and color) from their Kordes HT of the same name, which is a completely different rose from the Pink Aloha climber by Boerner (which is what most Americans consider to be the "real" Aloha). I'm with you though. When in doubt it's always safest to check the AEN (if it is available)before buying a rose.......Diane: thanks for the color comment. Pictures show it more orange red, but it may be due to the weather when the picture was taken or even technical issues (camera, moniter etc.). I'm looking more for the orange red (eg: Dolly Parton), rather then a red/red, so if you see one tomorrow at your show, it would be great to hear your take on it. I figured an orange/orange blend without BS would make headlines-lol. But I spray a bit, so unless it's really bad, it may be alright. It's the color that interests me for now...Thanks.....Maryl

RE: Anyone Growing Powerhouse?

Maryl,
I almost wrote earlier, but when Powerhouse and Tabasco Cat were both available a couple of years ago, I ended up getting TC (at Rosemania). I really love it. No scent, but perfect form right up until the blooms snap off and no need to spray it for either blackspot or cercospora, my 2 main foes.

I think I had originally wanted to buy Powerhouse, but it was sold out, so I went with something similar from the same vendor. Unfortunately, Robbie stopped offering minis last year & I'm not entirely sure if/when he will offer them again.

Maryl, I have both and purchased them at the same time from Rosemania. My Tabasco Cat either sported a white or there was two plants in the pot. The white which looks like Whirlaway has taken over and the Tabasco Cat is sooo tiny now. In the spring I need to separate them, if Tabasco Cat is to survive. On to your main topic, Powerhouse, it is a deep, vibrant orange with exhibition form. The bush gets some BS, even with spraying. The blooms last average, but very pretty. I like it better this year than last year, just give it time to establish as with most roses.

I got Powerhouse this spring as a small band plant. It seems to be growing quite well and the blooms are beautiful, a bright orange color with excellent form but no fragrance that I can detect. It did have some black spot but recovered quickly. It's given me three flushes already with a fourth one building now. I'm quite pleased with it so far. I can't say if it will winter well yet though.

Isn't that a pretty photo. That's just the color I'm looking for. Yes, winter hardy in my zone is another thing. Many yellows and oranges have bitten the dust from our erratic spring/fall freezes as well as our winter temperatures..... I noticed that Heirloom roses had it, but is sold out now...... I figured it will have some BS if not sprayed at all, but if it can't be controlled with my spray schedule it will be a goner. Thanks Kentucky for your input on its disease issues and growth information. And yours too Flaura......Maryl
