roses hardy to zone 4

I have been reading all the comments and have yet to read one from Zone 4. Anyone having good luck with roses from this zone? If so, would appreciate some names of the hardier ones and sources.

Here is a link to hardy roses from the University of Minnesota.

Here is a link that might be useful: Hardy Roses

This link is for northern gardening (gardenweb). They have people who grow roses there too. They might be helpful.

I grow my roses in pots, so don't pay attention to zones for my roses.

I am in zone 4, but with very little experience in gardening. I have found that the zoning of roses is not very reliable. I buy roses up to zone 5 and find some roses like my garden and some don't. I have much more problems with black spot than hardiness. The only roses I have ever lost to frost are ones I had in pots. I do protect some roses for winter and water heavily in the fall. The roses from Kordes are hardy and disease resistant. I have already put in my order for next spring at Palatine for thirty floribundas, all Kordes.
I should mention the David Austin roses survive easily with no protection but I don't like way they grow so I only have one Gertrude Jekyll. I planted two Kordes "Amore" in april of this year bare root that is now over five feet tall and has been blooming since.
I plant four inches below ground level.

Hope this helps some.

This is Morden's Sunrise. She is reputed to be hardy to Zone 3. She has very good reports on Dave's Garden website, though one person said there was die back in Zone 4. I live in British Columbia and last winter was very hard on roses, many in our village died. But Morden's Sunrise didn't seem to notice, she got an early start in spring and kept on growing. This will be my second winter coming up with her. Some people say they have had no blackspot with her. I and some others have had, but maybe our growing conditions aren't optimal for health. She is supposed to get full sun, but mine gets 5 hours a day at most in the summer. She has been a great delight, producing repeated rounds of blooms and when the first sun of the morning hits her, it turns on her yellow lights in a stunning way. She is always bright and sunny. Different colours at different times, usually more yellow than in this photo, but always a nice blend of apricot, yellow and rose colours.

While I absolutely adore 'Morden Sunrise' and also in BC I would not suggest it as being reliably hardy. Mine barely survived the winter and most folks I know half a zone to a zone colder lost it, some after multiple tries.

Also, as mentioned, it is NOT disease resistant in my gardens and actually was the worst of any rose. I had too keep up with sulphur sprays just to keep some foliage on it. My hopes of it making the winter are bleak.

I do love its fruity scent that can waft and its deep green shiny foliage (some years). What I dislike is how fast the blooms shatter.

Since it was my first rose it will always have a special spot in my heart but if it doesn't improve next year it is going to lose its prime spot.

Good Luck and YMMV

The delightful rugosa Therese Bugnet is resolutely tip hardy in my 5b and I understand it's tough enough for Z4.
It's a once bloomer for me- big flush in May with lessening and scattered blooms into very early July.
Watch out for PM! :)

I agree with MiGreenThumb that 'Therese Bugnet' is an excellent rose that flowers pretty much non stop here my zone 3 garden, I think that my deeply prepared moist soil helps in that regard. It also looks great in the winter with those nice red rather thorn free stems that take well to pruning. This is a very popular and widely planted rose that originated only a short distance from where I live. I'm a big fan of many of the rugosa roses.

Quietness The Buck roses are good. Do you like them?
Also
I have a Climber rose that did good this year. It was Viking Queen. It grew 10 feet.

I am in zone 5 but I like to plant colder zone hardy roses due to our winters we've had the last few years. Some that I have that I know are zone 4 hardy or cooler!

Carefree Beauty - zone 4
High Voltage - Zone 4
Kashmir - Zone 4
Rambling Red (climber) - Zone 3
Red Moss or Henri Martin - Old Moss Rose - Zone 4
John Davis - Zone 2

RE: roses hardy to zone 4

I grew over 200 different roses in zone 4 for 20 years before moving to zone 5 just two years ago. IMO, there are many, many roses that are 'growable' in zone 4 - depending on your expectations. If you can prune down to the ground in spring without shedding tears, if you can accept 2 and 3 foot tall plants when others on this forum talk about needing a ladder to sniff their blooms, if you're willing to lose a few but win a few more then choosing a rose for your garden shouldn't be all that difficult. Plant deeply, keep it fed appropriately and well watered during the growing season so that it goes into winter in a healthy state and you'd be surprised at what you can grow. There are many antique roses (once bloomers) that thrive in zone 4 conditions. I see some roses suggested in the posts above that people are saying they had trouble with - and I did not, while at the same time there are roses they are recommending that I thought were never quite satisfactory in their recovery from winter and I eliminated them. All zone 4's are not equal, so the best you can do is read, read, read and then experiment yourself in your garden. That would be my best advice.
