"Penelope" not responding to pegging

"Penelope" has not responded to pegging (which I initiated about six months ago); beautiful big canes held down horizontally did not produce new shoots.

Suggestions? or do some varieties simply not respond to pegging and I should give up?

The canes on my Penelope are so stiff it would be impossible to peg them. How did you manage it? Or are we talking two different Penelope's here?

yep, mine are stiff but also, it does throw a couple of quite long canes which can be tied down early enough in the season. I wouldn't recommend doing this to penelope though as it is a rose which does better pruned into a more compact bush, to my mind. For a hybrid musk, I have always found it to be a little ungainly and best disguised with other plants such as clematis and tall foxgloves. How old is yours? I ask because it can take 4 years to attain a generous framework if you do want to let it grow on to look a little 'wild'. For the first 3 years, mine was quite embarrassingly clunky and is only now, at 5, beginning to develope a fuller graceful outline.

I'm sure you'll get bloom on laterals next spring, and then some strong laterals that will need cutting back. Maybe it hasn't had enough water to grow much this summer.

pegging

Thanks, all. My three Penelopes are mostly in the shade, so the canes don't get as huge as some I've seen--which is probably why I can peg them when they're still limber. Will do as you say and wait till next year: maybe it'll happen then!
