Digging near a climbing rose

Hello,

I want to do some companion planting around my 5 year old New Dawn. Currently there is a 3-1/2 ft empty space in front of it. I want to make a very small set up to grow a plant that requires sandy soil and excellent drainage. So I'll be putting some large flat rocks between the very organic soil of New Dawn and the sandy soil of the new space. I know I shouldn't get any closer than 2 feet to the stem of New Dawn, but I'm wondering if I should even get that far.
