I think every garden that it can grow in well should have SdlM. It's my best rose and you'll never regret having a rose this classically beautiful. I discarded Gruss an Aachen because of its severe rust problem but many people grow this rose. Clotilde can ball in some climates so I haven't attempted it. I'm not familiar with the last rose.

I was hoping some of the Phoenix folk would give you some local advice but I can tell you what works in my Las Vegas yard. Of the roses listed I have only tried Sdlm and loved it but it didn't like where I put it and I lost a few but plan to try again.

I have had great success (for a rose in an unfriendly environment) with Eugene de Beauharnais. He is very fragrant, low in thorns, and crazy beautiful but he is a small plant. A much larger bush but quite thorny and small flowered that has done well for me is Belle Vichyssoise.

Some more modern roses do well also but your ultimate location by a west facing wall is troubling. That is a spot I would never attempt a rose here. The afternoon sun is brutal and the wall reflects additional heat and it will take a well adapted plant to thrive in that position. The plants that fit that bill here are the Texas rangers, Leucophyllums, Cordia boissieri and parvifolia, agaves and cactus and cassias (Sennas).

I have seen roses in certain microclimate spots that tolerate full sun spots but in my yard afternoon sun is the kiss of death unless shaded by a tree or shade clothe. Eugene is a great rose for a pot however and you can move pots around with the seasons. He also likes to bloom.

SDLM is a must , so that one would be my first pick. Clothide Soupert is also a good rose, so that one I would recommend. My mother 's garden in Tempe has Gruss an Aachen and it is good here.

What about some tea roses (not hybrid teas) such as Maman Cochet, Mrs BR Can't, etc. They do very well in our hot, dry climate.
