Corsages?

| We have a banquet coming up soon and I had completely forgotten volunteering to make corsages for it. I've done some makeshift ones for us before, never expecting them to last more than a couple of hours.
I'd like to do these the right way & keep the roses hydrated. Does anyone have experience making them? What sort of vials should I look for? I plan on using mint as greenery, and I'm assuming I should get a tool to strip the prickles?
Any other tips or suggestions? |

| Are these to be worn on the lapel/shoulder or on the wrists? Generally, if a highly scented material is to be used, it's kept on the wrist where it will have less chance of competing or clashing with the wearer's cologne. Would you honestly want something as highly scented and easily bruised as mint for the greenery? Kim |

| I believe they are going to be worn on lapels. I only need 6 of them, so it's not a huge task. I have several unscented roses I could use; I did a couple last year from miniatures and even without the vials they lasted a good 4 hours. Everything else in our garden is either an herb, a hosta, or coral bells if it's not a purty rose. I used the mint last year and it held up well without bruising. It also came in handy when I had a glass of tea later....lol. |

| They make small plastic picks for using in corsages. Look at craft stores like Jo Ann's or Michael's. Or even at some nurseries that have florist departments. I'm sure they have the right pieces to make corsages with. |

| I would think your unscented roses would make better choices for the corsages. They wouldn't have as much potential to trigger any allergic responses, nor would they clash with colognes. If the mint was acceptable last time, go for it. I'm not sure how grateful someone who applies their own scent would be to have that competition, though. For tea or cooking or a nice, stinky bouquet to be shared, absolutely. To wear near their face, I dunno. Good luck! Kim |

One alternative to mint would be to purchase a maidenhair fern hanging basket and select a few fronds to cut for your corsages. Then you could put the remaining fern in a sunny bathroom for the winter. I have learned that they want to be lightly watered every day, however. They swoon like a soap opera star if you forget. | Thanks everyone! It's not a high-fallutin sort of gathering, and I have a feeling that any scent in the corsages is going to have a difficult time competing for nose attention. Laura, I love ferns but I'm a notorious fern-murderer. I may have to give that one a try, though! |

| I have three pots of maidenhair and they are easy care so long as you water every day. Mine get really ratty for three or four weeks in August from the heat, but they bounce right back. It would make a very delicate-looking corsage. |
