| In the past, when I haven't planted my bands straight into the ground, I've only potted them into one gallons. Most have done OK, but no doubt would have been better off with the patient nurturing practiced by many posters here. I plan to handle my future bands more carefully.
Jeri et al, how long--generally--does it take your bands to progress to five or seven gallon containers? Do you also pot up bareroots? Thanks, Colleen |

| Colleen, that is going to depend upon time of year, climate, type of rose, vigor of the individual plant, etc. Strong growing, vital plants may only take a couple of months to make it from gallons to threes or fives. Weaker, slower growing types may require a year or even two to make it into fives and larger. Of course, warmer weather (not bellows of Hades hot, should you get to "enjoy" that) will encourage faster growth of all types, as will generous feeding of the fertilizers of your choice. Disbudding to prevent flowering will also help push them to mature faster. Blue for You took just three or so months from the original band to a three gallon, and only a month or two before it was pushing to be planted. Moser House Striped, what is thought to be Rainbow, the striped sport of Papa Gontier, required much of the year to fill out the three gallon before I was comfortable planting it. Blue for You is waist high and about as wide. Moser is still about a third of that size. So much of it is climate dependent as well as genetic, it's difficult to give hard and fast suggestions how long to expect. Kim |

| Colleen -- We haven't bought a bare root in longer than I can remember -- but when we DID buy them, we planted them directly into the ground. The "how long" question has to be answered with: "It depends." When they have roots showing out the bottom of the 1-G., we pot them up to 5-G. That might take 3 months, or it might take a year. It depends upon the cultivar (and the weather conditions). That probably wasn't helpful. :-) AHA! I see that Kim just said the same thing. Jeri |
