| I'm thinking of planting some JPII's among Mr. Lincolns and Double Delights. The Lincolns are 6' and the Double Delights are 5'. I was thinking the JPII's would get about 5' considering the roots and my climate here in coastal SoCal?
The Secrets will be going next to a walkway where you can pass close by and smell them. How tall and wide will they get on Fort roots?
Thanks Lee |

With Secret, the thing I always wondered about was, how would it have grown, had the cultivar not been virused from the outset. Jeri

Anyone growing these 2 roses on Fort?

I don't have any roses on fortuniana, but my PJPII easily gets taller than 5 ft on Dr. Huey. That could just be a Texas thing though.

Thanks Brittie, In coastal SoCal it should also grow 5-6'. At least that's what I'm hoping.... Lee

Hijack...sorry. But if I got a PJPII on multiflora roots, how tall would that go here in zone 9a/Los Angeles area? I don't know what rootstock it's on, but I have a thriving PJPII in a 1/2 barrel...it's 1.5 years, and stands close to 3 1/2 feet, and is blooming it's head off right now. It's actually bigger than the one in the ground about 4 feet away...but I have hopes for that one, too. Thanks (and sorry for the hijack...). Best- Herding Cats

Things get complicated with PJPII. For the first 5 yrs or so after its introduction, the rose was available only as a Jackson & Perkins 'New Generation' (own root) rose. There are many gardeners who are absolutely convinced that the bareroot PJP they received and planted is on Dr. Huey when, in fact, it is a J&P 'New Generation' rose on its own roots. The first grafted plants that J&P authorized were on Fortuniana, and were available from a Florida nursery that went out of business a short while after negotiating the agreement with J&P. PJPII grafted on Dr. Huey became available only after J&P declared bankruptcy. I got my first PJP on Huey last spring. After only one growing season, the grafted plant is now larger and more productive than two New Generation PJPs that I've had since the variety was introduced. I understand that the variety is available on Fortuniana from K&M Roses. I would expect it to be spectacular on that rootstock. PJP recently became available on Multiflora (from Palatine). I'll be interested to hear how it does on that rootstock. Due to my experience with PJP on Huey, I suspect it'll also perform better on Multiflora than it does on its own roots.

One word of caution about multiflora rootstock and alkaline soil. Multiflora doesn't always grow as well in this kind of soil--I have alkaline and have quite a few roses from Palatine. It's been a mixed bag of performance from these roses. I prefer Dr Huey, but if the rose I want isn't available with this rootstock, I'll order one on multiflora. I use fertilizer for acid loving plants for these roses and soil acidifiers which I think help. Diane

Jaxondel, you know, I actually forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Diane, thanks for the tip about alkaline and multiflora. I will definitely be amending my soil, and will make sure that I use acidic fertilizers. Appreciate it! (This place is so full of great help...thanks everyone!) Best- Herding Cats

Lee: Altho 'Secret' certainly isn't the prickliest of HTs, the prickles on a mature plant are serious enough that you might not want to plant them too close to your walkway.

Some variation in 'Secret', probably, mine is near thornless. On Huey, big strong plant after 12 years. Best in spring and fall. Blooms non-stop in summer also, but flowers are half the size of spring and fall's. Own root PJP is 6' but rather thin of cane still after 4 years.

Thank you everyone for the replies! It still sounds like JPII will be tall enough.
