I have several knockout rose bushes that are now 2 years old. A few have some really high stems that I'd like to trim back, but from my reading it sounds like late winter/early spring is the recommended time to do pruning. Will I hurt the roses if I do a little trimming now? Thanks.

You can do light pruning if there is a real need, such as thorns in the path, but it's better to wait till early spring. Heavy pruning will stimulate new growth that will be killed in a zone 6 winter and waste some of the plant's stored energy.

Thanks! I'll wait til spring.

If a cane is exceedingly tall, like over 5 or 6 feet and sticks out above the majority of the rest of the plant, you could trim it down to the height of the rest of that bush. That way it won't blow around and possibly break over winter. But wait to do this until after the plant has gone dormant. Otherwise for any hard pruning it's best to do it in the spring.
