I will be visiting the St. Pete area next week and would love to visit some gardens with roses, and maybe even a nursery with a good selection of roses. Thanks for any suggestions.

hey Linda, I miss our chats!

Donny

We had a time share there (I say had because we lived longer than the contract). I used old Rose Annuals to locate the public rose gardens, but found them to be either gone or in bad shape. For a long tme we had an active Tampa area rosarian on this forum. I cannot remember his name.

I recomend the Ringling Brothers Rose garden near Sarasota.

The Tampa Rose Society should be able to give you up to date information.

Hope you have an enjoyable trip.

Hi Donny, I love my Jadis that I got from you years ago.... great rose! And the Sydonie, as well.

Krista, I remember you! I'm still growing and selling roses, I just do not ship anymore. I'm so glad you like Jadis and Sydonie!

There aren't many rose gardens in St. Pete. The Florida Botanical Gardens in Largo is wonderful, but their rose garden is not so great at the moment. The local nurseries don't carry a lot of roses. They get most of their fortuniana roses from Nelson's Rose. If you check Nelson's website they will tell you which nurseries they have shipped to recently.

Tks Amberroses. The Botanical Gardens sounds really nice and may take a few hours to enjoy. I'll check out Nelson's Roses too.

The Botanical Gardens are very nice. Their roses are still recovering from chilli thrips, but they have many other beautiful plants. Also Sunken Gardens in St. Pete is nice.

I assume you'll be keeping pretty close to St Pete during your visit. If you intend to venture further afield, I'd recommend a visit to the remarkable rose gardens at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. In addition to the vast array of roses that Malcolm Manners has collected and oversees there, the college is famous for the buildings Frank Lloyd Wright designed for its campus (the world's largest collection of FLW-designed buildings situated in one location). Lakeland is roughly the same distance from St Pete as Sarasota (but in another direction).

Donny, are you still selling roses at the Farmers Market in Raleigh? If so, when would be a likely time to find you there come spring/early summer?

I had already thought of Malcoms college, but we do have constraints on time, and not everyone who is going is a rose nut like me.

I'm still at the Raleigh Farmer's Market. We normally start our season around March 15 and stay til the end of October. Tomorrow will be the last day of the present season. At our annual market meeting, our manager now refers to our market as a State Attraction. We had 3.6 million visitors, and I feel like I spoke with each and everyone of them!!! lol
