Own root care for winter in zone 5A,

I've built a new Pergola, 12'x24', for which I would like to plant new own root roses. Mostly climbers or ramblers, Now I have a heated green that can easily be kept above freezing.

Now I'm planning to buy most of the roses now and grow them on. Good idea?

Why take the chance and make work for yourself? You could order now and have them delivered in the spring. The nursery will take better care of them over the winter because that's what they do for a living. You'll get good viable plants to start out with in the spring then. They're not going to really do any growing on, even in the greenhouse, over winter so they really won't be any bigger for you to plant out. That's what I'd do.

RE: Own root care for winter in zone 5A,

I think that seil's comments are good advice. But, I'm going to throw a "but" in here. "But" since you have this new Pergola & if you wish to try an "experiment" with your idea of getting some roses thru the winter....place an order for 3 roses (usually the minimum order) from a rose seller & see how it works for you. Gardening is about expermenting & learning by doing if something is a good, bad or so-so idea are some of the fun things to do as a gardener.
