rose in pot what to do?

Posted by pembroke 6 (My Page) on

I dug a small rose a couple weeks ago and put in pot wanting to see what blooms next year. It's a root off of the rose Chrysler Imperial. Anyway this rose is looking good and I'm wondering to put in ground or to leave in pot through winter? Haven't thought about where to put in ground yet. Leave in pot? How to take it through winter? Thanks. Pembroke

Unless your Chrysler Imperial was on its own roots, the rose you have propagated is rootstock -- almost certainly 'Dr. Huey.'
It's probably not something you want to grow.

RE: rose in pot what to do?

If I had to do it over I'd of planted mine outside with added winter protection vs taking them though winter in a pot
Like you I hadn't realy made up my mind on where they'll go so I am stuck with the winter pot growing It's a tuff task one that can be done with some added work.

I place my 3 pots in a kitty litter box type holder and when its cold out I bring that in and put em on a bench 2 feet off the ground. Our first frost spell gifted me powdery mildew so be on the ready for PM.
My next gift was these small fruit fly sized pest that make home in the warmer pots. As the first frost spells have seemed to pass I again just leave em outside in this box thing day and night.
Watering is done twice weekly in side or out I recycle the water from the kitty litter box.
Fertilizing is done but at a 1/5th amount each 6th week

When I see an ice forming on the top of the kitty box water catching I'll bring em in again and keep an eye on the temps if they can be outside thats where they'll be. This inside growing idea is something I will not ever do again in the future.

Best of luck Pembroke I think the extra work will pay off if not for you but for others
