Rose suggestions

Hey, this isn't as much a problem as it is opinion. I am expanding my rose garden and am able to include 6 hybrid teas and grandifloras into the family. My problem is deciding which to plant. I already have my heart set on Olympiad, Double Delight, and Opening night, but i need help deciding the last 3. Any suggestions? I am looking for the typical hybrid tea shape of flower, large flowers, good color, and good disease resistance.Fragrance is nice, but not a must. -Thanks

I'm not in your zone, but thought I'd mention Perfume Delight. It's vigorous, a great bloomer with beautiful color and fragrance.

It gets blackspot in my no-spray garden, however this does not diminish vigor or hardiness.

Oh gosh! What a question! There are thousands of them, lol! Do you have any color preferences? Of course disease resistance is very regional so take any suggestions with a grain of salt.

My best performers are:

Folklore, very tall and upright growth, blooms in big flushes and fair disease resistance for me.

Veterans' Honor, also tall, lots of HUGE blooms and middling disease resistance.

Garden Party, shorter and wider growth, big and smelly blooms, middling disease resistance.

Red Intuition, vigorous and bushy growth, smaller bloom size but plenty of them, a little more disease prone.

And all of those are very hardy in my garden and have been here at least 5 years through a range of different winter conditions.

My cousin around the block from me also has Midas Touch which has been very good for her, tall grower, large blooms and good health. And she doesn't spray at all.

Some I wouldn't recommend because they've been spindly and disease riddled:

Ingrid Bergman
Intrigue
Pope John Paul II, although I love the beautiful large scented blooms but it's a spot magnet and not very vigorous.
Snowfire
Peace, unless you can get a hold of an old one. Seems the ones around now are poor growers and very unhealthy. I've had three and none of them have done very well.

Good luck and keep us posted on your choices!

You aren't going to find excellent disease-resistance in a hybrid tea. They are notorious spotters. Some are above average in disease-resistance, but that does not mean they have very good or excellent disease-resistance.

A couple of my somewhat more disease-resistant HTs are Valencia--big gorgeous apricot/buff blooms; Elle--light pink with apricot/yellow highlights; Chrysler Imperial--wonderful velvet red; and Memoire--pure white.

I'd also rank Red Intuition right up there. I've had little disease-problems with it.

For spring, I'm ordering a yellow HT--Berolina--which is supposed to have good disease-resistance.

Don't know how I forgot Elina (white/lemon yellow blend) and Peter Mayle (hot pink) in my east bed--Elina especially has good disease-resistance, but is a BIG bush (and with sharp thorns). Excellent bloomer and rebloomer.

I also like Elina. Tons of big, soft yellow blooms. Parole has huge blooms. And I like Queen Elizabeth.

Looking thru my garden, I found these roses that might fit

Spellbound-coral
Beloved-deep red
Tropicana-orange

Red Intuition a must! My new favorite rose.

Tropicana, beautiful salmon color & very fragrant

RE: Rose suggestions

Yes, Tropicana is a beautiful color and very fragrant, but in the humid midwest I think it's nearly impossible to keep it's foliage either green or healthy. I have a massive Tropicana that hasn't been culled yet, and I keep it for sentimental reasons, but I think there are better, fragrant Hybrid Teas in its color class. Folklore is drop dead gorgeous & healthy compared to my Tropicana.

My best orange by far is the non-fragrant Kanegem. It's either a shrub or flori by official classification, but it produces the best hybrid-tea shaped blooms--in abundance--of any of my roses. I've never had a disease issue with it, and it's extremely vigorous.

Another vote for Elina. No health issues, and it's rare that this rose isn't in bloom here. Seems to love heat.

RE: Rose suggestions

Where can you get Red Intuition? It's gorgeous!

RE: Rose suggestions

Houston is by far #1 in humidity. We never ever have arid heat. At the moment, Tropicana and Koko Loko are blooming. Of course, out heat is now tolerable.

Vavoom is a true orannge, not salmon.

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned Belinda's Dream. For me it is the best large flower pink out there. No black spot what so ever. Long stems, huge flowers and a great fragrence. Look it up :)

RE: Rose suggestions

As far as I know, the only place to get Red Intuition is Palatine Nursery in Canada--and they have excellent plants grafated on multiflora roots, not on Dr. Huey like most USA hybrid teas. If I remember correctly, you need a minimum of 3 for an order.

I got my RI from Wisconsin Roses a few years ago. I don't know if they still carry it or not though.

Wow! All of these roses are beautiful! I just love Folklore and Red Intuition, and Belinda's Dream is gorgeous! But then again, there is rarely a rose without some beautiful aspect but i digress. Anybody managed to get their hands on that new "Twilight Zone" rose? Looks to be one of the darkest violets out there.
Thanks again!

RE: Rose suggestions
