Can Anyone ID This Rose I got at HD?

This rose was in their returns dept, waiting to go back to the garden center. They didn't have any more in the store. I talked them into selling it to me for $5 since it didn't have a tag, and has leaf damage (there's more than you can see, on the right side), probably from being too dry, and it's bone dry now. It's on its own roots, and is in a 2 gallon pot. I'm going to give it a drink with Superthrive and Medina Hasta Gro and will repot it in a couple of days.

It looks like Easy going ... with the color deepens in cooler weather.

The other yellow floribunda is Nurse Tracy Davies, but this one has really glossy foliage.

RE: Mystery Solved

I stopped by another HD this afternoon, and they had one of these - it's Vavoom. HMF says it is "suitable for garden decoration", and I wonder if that means when it quits blooming, throw it away, like happens with so many other blooming plants, like orchids.

Could be Sun Flaire too. I haven't had much luck bargaining with HD, but I have terrific luck with Lowes. A few weeks ago, I found 3 very pathetic looking DA's - 2 Princess Alexandra of Kents, and 1 Young Lycidas for 1/2 off. Since I already have both, I didn't jump, but when I came back to "peek" a week later, Young Lycidas was still sitting there, with 3' bare canes with new leaf growth at the ends (someone must have finally gotten off their buttocks to water it). I brought it to the manager and said - this guy needs a home, how much. I walked out with it for $6.25.

Then, 2 years ago I found a Pink Supreme carpet rose on the dead & dying rack for $1. Someone had been kind enough to remove the dead leaves, leaving it with a handful of 6" bare canes. How could I resist (having no desire for a carpet rose). 2 years later it's about 4' x 4' x 2', and covered with blooms.

To this day most of my, now 90 roses were HD and Lowes bargains - body bags, discounted "didn't sell"s, and just some plain ole perfectly good under $8 1.5 gallons. They are intermingled with my quality web orders and specialty nursery roses - and to be honest, visually I just don't see any difference after they've been in the ground for 2 years.

And what HD had Vavoom! Not known for its vigor, but I'd sure be grabbing it if you like bright orange.

Oh - and eahamel - might be a little late in the season to fertilize. Not familiar with Superthrive or Medina Hasta Gro, but just by name they sound like nice spring additions... If you're going to repot (or put in ground), putting in quality soil with plenty of water is all she probably needs. Don't want to get her all excited about growing and blooming prior to tne upcoming frosts...

Eahamel-- by "decorative" they don't mean disposable, just that blooms don't have that formal hybrid tea shape like we see in florist's roses.

A floribunda or shrub rose might be called decorative.

I guess it's too late to tell you now, but I always water roses really well and then let them sit for at least a few hours before I fertilize. This stops leaf-tip burn that I had experienced in the past.

Harmony - the HD is in Houston; apparently they have a bunch of roses (own root) that are called "deocrative roses". Other than that, about all they have are have are Knockouts.

It's about time for us to do our last fertilization for the year. If we have a freeze before late Dec. that will be very unusual, and I've had roses in bloom even in January and Feb. Feb. is when we are supposed to prune, and I always have to take blooms off when I prune. Especially Mme Antoine Mari.

Oops, it's Medina Plus, not Hasta-Gro. It says it's "A combination of Medina Soil Activator fortified with seaweed extracts high in micronutrients and natural plant growth regulators. Ideal for reducing transplant shock and making foliar sprays to stimulate fruiting and blooming". Guaranteed analysis is -- Magnesium .50%, Iron .10% and Zink .05%. It's made in Hondo, Texas - see medinaag.com.

Superthrive is a combo of B vitamins (you can smell them) and other stuff, I have no idea what, and it's used to revive stressed or shocked plants. It isn't a fertilizer. People have been using it on orchids for decades, that's how I know about it, and it's good for just about plants. The label looks like those Dr. Bronner's castile soap labels, and my bottle is small, so it's impossible to read.

Hi Eahamel: Thanks for the info. on Superthrive. I went to Cantigny rose park in my zone 5a, with over 1,000 to find a rose that match the picture you posted above. Guess what? It's Honey Perfume, which matches exactly the leaves, the color & shape of boom, and bush shape. Unfortunately it has no scent in our cold temp. at 40 degrees.

The Honey Perfume's blooms at the rose park look exactly like yours, rather than the pics. in HMF.

Strawberry, the tag on the one I found at another HD said it was Vavoom, and according to HMF, it was introduced last year.

I found Honey Perfume on Heirloom's site, and it says it was introduced in 2004, and says the blooms "soften" to nearly white. This rose's blooms don't change color at all as they age.

There are so many that look alike, aren't there?

RE: Can Anyone ID This Rose I got at HD?

It sure looks like Vavoom to me. I have had this rose for several years, maybe 5-6years? So it wasn't introduced last year, not sure why it would say that on HMF. But it is definitely able to withstand zone 5 winters, so it is more than just decorative:0) I would be happy to pick another one up. It has been a good rose for me & I haven't seen it anywhere since I bought it at our local nursery.

Mel, You might check your HD in the spring - I suspect yours won't have roses right now.

I had a bit of time to kill today, our local HD has Pink Peace, Blaze, Purple Passion, Mr Lincoln and Perfume Delight

Looks just like my Vavoom. The rose was registered in 2005 and Weeks started selling it in 2007. I haven't a clue where that 2011 came from.
