GARDENING GUIDESWhat Kind of Roses Should You Grow?
Want to add the beauty of roses to your garden? Find out which ones, from old-fashioned to modern, are right for you
Full StoryI have a trellis that is about 9 feet tall against a huge used brick chimney, that is near our front door. It is a southwest exposure that gets full sun with late afternoon filtered shade. I had planted a true climber there several years ago and it overwhelmed it. Now that we have remodeled the house the garden is getting a complete redo as well. I want to train a rose against that trellis that won't overwhelm it, that means staying about 9 feet tall. Since it is near the door I'd like strong fragrance, a peach color to go with the house colors, and full and dense growth, not leggy.
In a previous house I had planted an Abraham Darby. It really took off in my S. Calif climate. Loved the flowers and scent and it flowered all spring and summer. I'm thinking of planting one and training it on the trellis.
What do you think? I don't have a lot of experience with roses, is there another one that you would recommend?
