| I would love to grow a tall (over 5 foot) hedge using a yellow rose. I have heard that Graham Thomas is good for this because it can get HUGE. I love the flower but have never worked with a shrub this tall. Do I have to provide it with any support or is it fine on its own?
Also, I want to train Clematis Etoille Violet through my Graham Thomas.. never worked with Clematis either though. (I just bought a house so Im excited about getting my rose garden going!) Can I train the Clematis directly onto Graham Thomas or do I need to provide extra support here as well? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

| I have clematis in my Felecia and it has worked out well. The little clematis stems are super brittle as summer wears on. If you have a clematis that you can cut to the ground then it's easy. The ones that stay in the rose are trickier. The stems break easily and so you have to be careful at rose pruning time. I have not grown DA rose GT but I would always provide some support for the tall DA roses. Wind can knock them over into a leaning position. Big canes fall out of the shrub when loaded with flowers. Any support is good. It does not have to be fancy because it will eventually be covered. I would make it at least half as tall as you want the hedge to be. If you have any wind hitting this spot, I would make a permanent sturdy support. Right now I have a big Peach Silk attempting to pull a trellis off a storage shed. I never expected this rose to get the size that it did and I should have made a stronger trellis. Now I have to cut the rose back and replace the trellis. |
