October bloom and Q' about name of this beauty

I went outside this morning to finally get my unknown pink climber in the ground (Yes, I know, a few months late! at least she is in and no worse for wear, AND up on the trellis!) We talked about her here: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/roses/msg060158131604.html
and decided she may be Excelsa. I still haven't emailed the Wyck garden about it, but will eventually. Months after the fact, of course. Seems I am about that behind on stuff.

Well, anyhow, just to brighten my day I discovered this October gift:

Abe Darby on October 26th!

A beauty, perfectly suited for October and a great gift for right before the giant impending storm!

Now, this is supposed to be Abe Darby. Color seems right, maybe, but my petals aren't as "fluffy" as I have seen in some other photographs. I've only seen him bloom a couple times, maybe just immature yet?

Could this be something else?

Well, no matter what he (or she) is, I truly love her! Shape and color both! :)

No. Not Abraham Darby.

Check out, rather 'Pat Austin.'

My guess on that one would be Heaven on Earth and it's beautiful. Mine looks a lot like that one, but it's not an Austin rose by any means. It's a Grandiflora. Does it hang its head?

It's lovely no matter what it is!

Yes, I do agree that it is Pat Austin. Heaven on Earth is beautiful, but I think the coloring I have seen on my few blooms is very consistent with Pat Austin (as well as the petal shape). And yes, she does always nod, which is why I was so surprised with this bloom. I didn't even know it was budding. It was facing down and to the neighbors yard, so I am glad I went out there today to work and got to see her. I think there is one more bud on her. I hope it opens before it gets too cold.

I am fairly sure that it is an Austin rose, too. A couple years ago, a woman from freecycle offered cuttings of her roses, which I took and rooted. The assortment included my unknown climber , another unknown white (which did not take) and what she said was Abraham Darby. She had not too long ago bought the property but I got the impression she knew at least the id of Abe Darby and had planted it herself. I never saw it in bloom when I picked up the cuttings, but expected all along that I was growing Abe.

It has given only a few blooms, but they have all been consistent to this one and not packed with petals like Abe. I kind of thought that it may grow into itself so to speak, but I am pretty sure it is obviously not Abe at this point.

Just as well, I like this bloom form better! And the color is so wonderful.

Unfortunately, it seems I have apparently rooted a rose still under patent. It was unintentional, I thought I was rooting something older. I feel sort of dirty. :(

Hmmm.... I may have misread the above. Or, wait... I guess that both of Pat and Heaven on Earth nod?

Well, I am pretty sure she knew it was an Austin rose, and it looks much like Pat.

I wish I could find another picture but can't seem to locate any more of her.

It looks like my Abbay de Cluny, a Romantica from Meiland. Diane

Looks like my Pat. If she gets more yellow tones in some weather or when aging, that would give a clue.

I love my Pat Austin! I have mine in filtered bright shade, and she really enjoys it. I like her color that way, too -- the color you have right there :) Beautiful!

Another vote for Pat Austin, I see how clean the foliage is! My Pat Austin has very green, clean foliage, yet tends to be quite thirsty, and will show signs of thirst sooner than others, but when happy, the cleanest apple green foliage in the bunch! And the flower is loosely petaled. I'd say a match!

I have Heaven on Earth and this rose in your pic is too orange.

I think it looks like Pat Austen also. Abbeye de Cluny is a peacheir color, and the inner petals tend to cling together. A partly opened AdCl looks like a huge peach colored bud.

See if there are small, red prickles, or bristles on the peduncle. Pat Austin has them. Kim

Like this, Kim?

Photobucket

I cut that bloom in the photograph on Sunday, it has faded to yellow but has not dropped petals.

Does it have a strong tea scent? If so, likely Pat Austin. Coloring is consistent with Pat.

I realize there are climate differences. Yes, the bristles look like that as far as shape. Here, the stem is green and the bristles are RED. It's a trait picked up from Foetida and expressed by the early Pernetianas. Pat Austin is very much an "Austin Pernetiana" in traits. From your original photos showing that orange/apricot/copper; the shape and these bristles, I would say it has quite a bit of the look and feel of Pat Austin to me. I'm not used to seeing PA fade to yellow, but, again, that could be climatic variation. Kim
