Well, I'm finally an honest to goodness rose addict with more money than I have space. (Yes, I snickered to myself several times about rose people and good sense and pot ghettos.) I purchased three roses from Heirloom's half price sale earlier this year and didn't have any place to put them. These 3 pots plus 6 more gallon pots and 14 Styrofoam cups of my baby cuttings are all buried in my garden up to their lips. I don't remember what other people do to over winter pots, but this is what I decided to try. If they die, oh horror! I'll have to order more and propagate more. Maybe at that point my good sense will overcome wishful thinking. (or not!)

Yep, you've joined the ranks of the addicted! Burying them is a tried and true method for winter protection so they should be fine. I don't do it because I have so many roses that are permanently in pots and it would be too labor intensive. I am concerned though. It seems awfully early to have put them in already. Have you had killing frosts already? Were they completely dormant?

Well, I had a day off yesterday (Mon Oct 22) and good weather, so I buried them, just the pot part. I didn't cover the rose plant itself. 'Twas more work than I thought it would be and a terrific incentive to only plant them ONE MORE TIME, permanently. I either need to stop buying and propagating or convince a neighbor to donate some land for a rose garden. I live in a townhouse, so I'm an oddity in the rose gardening world, for sure. Disease resistant roses and compost are my mantra. I have about (jeez don't I know exactly?!) 27 roses, and I've shovel pruned about as many more to get ones I like and that are reasonably disease resistant here.

Perhaps there is a local nursing home or senior center that could use some beautification? It's nice to share... :)
