| I am moving from 6A (SW Missouri) to 5A (metro Denver). I want to take about 10 of my roses with me. We will travel mid Nov. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well roses grow in the Denver area. It does get down to -10, but the sun shines almost everyday! I will have to water a lot as there is not much rain. My roses are 5-12 yrs old, mostly Austins, a few HTs.
How do I prepare the roses? Just keep them watered? When do I start digging & cutting them back (18-24"?). Remove leaves? My BIG question is how do I over winter them? I won't be able to plant them permanently for a while. I need to prepare the soil. It is basically good, but has not been amended for years. Is it better to pot the roses & over winter in the garage? What about heeling them in the ground? I'm also moving peonies, hydrangeas, lilies & clematis. Many, many thanks for your suggestions!!! |

| I would dig them out now while the soil is still unfrozen and pot them up. Then leave them in the pots and if you have a garage in your new place in Denver store them in there until you can plant in the spring. If no garage is available place them in a protected area and mulch them heavily for the winter. |

| I don't move for 4 weeks. It is 65 deg today & the ground likely won't freeze before we move. If I prune & pot now won't that stimulate new growth? I can't wait until the last week to pot up. Should I put in my garage now? Will that force dormancy? The roses will likely overwinter in the new Denver garage. Will force dormancy? Many thanks for any suggestions. |
