| Does anyone know where I can by Dark Night, the red rose with the yellow reverse? I ordered it last year from Armstrong Gardens, but they never got it in and had to refund my money. This was super annoying because by the time I figured that out, Dark Night was already sold out at Edmunds.
This year Edmunds isn't offering the rose. Was it so bad that their cover rose isn't even brought back for a second year?
Any tips would be appreciated!

| I hear the Rare & unusual rose auction down the coast from you has a big healthy one on the auction block. Other then that I understand you'll have to wait another year or two. I lucked out and got two last spring. They're planted out back by Sunstruck. They get afternoon shade and love it. For 1st year bushs they are big and full. Everyone in my neighborhood love it. My bushs are full of buds and blooms right now. We'll see how they handle cool weather. It is suppossed to be in the 30's for a good solid week. A lady down the street thinks they are so lovely they can't be real. But she see's them blooming on the bush's and she is really impressed with the foliage. I'm picky about what goes into the garden but this beauty is a keeper. |

Yes, we have the rose sold as "Dark Night" on the silent auction list under its ARS official name, which was Garden Director Bartje Miller. But it is the same rose, and once you get it, you can call it by whichever of its three names you prefer: Garden Director Bartje Miller, Dark Night (or sometimes Knight), or Eddy Mitchell. I do grow it and like it, and it even won best open bloom for me that last time I put it in a rose show. Please come down to the auction -- I think you will see plenty that you like besides that one, and it's fun to inspect roses in person before putting out the $$. And maybe bring the family. Go to the beach, or just make a day of exploring Del Mar, etc. But even if you can't come, submit an online bid for that one. I think I remember you are in the OC, right? Assuming that, I will bring it up to you if you win. Kathy |

| If you don't win the auction... I thought Rogers' had it this year--maybe they will have it again? |
RE: Dark Night

| Actually, I looked for it when there last weekend for the OCRS rose show, and it's not there now. It's also not in Star's wholesale catalog, nor at Edmunds, so I think it's probably not going to be in the nurseries this year. Maybe next year one of them will bring it back. It is a good rose, and undeserving of its fast dunk on the marketplace just because the economy sucks now. |

| I missed out on it too! Planned on grabbing it up for next Spring but no one has it. Boo! |

| Thanks for all of the info! I called Roger's Gardens. The rose guy swears that 2012 is the official year of introduction and that Roger's will carry it come January. I hope that it is true! It seems unlikely though. I'm not sure if I can make the auction that weekend, but maybe I'll put in an Internet bid. Thanks Kathy for the offer to bring the rose to OC if I win! - Azure |

| I don't know where you live in Southern Ca, but I was at Armstrong's in Encinitas today and they have a couple of Dark Knights. |
RE: Dark Night

| If any of you get it, DO call it Garden Director Bartje Miller. Bartje, who is a wonderful lady now in her 90's, has long cared for the rose garden at the Wrigley Mansion ("Tournament" House, Pasadena). I knew her in the early 1970's, long before I fell in love with roses, as a wonderful dog lady, who taught me a LOT about training dogs. Jeri Jennings |

| Thanks kathy. I bought ketchup and mustard today, 24.99 was a bit steep but i figured I wasn 't paying shipping. I may go back tomorrow with the coupon and see what else follows me home. |

| DO NOT spend all of your rose money at Armstrong!! Save some for the Nov. 13 auction -- there will be many things that need to follow you home there, and some of them will be really inexpensive (I got a couple of roses for less than $5 last year). One that will not be on the $5 level, but nevertheless interesting, is Simsalabim. This is the actual 5 gallon plant that will be auctioned:
And this is a closer shot of that week old bloom peeking out of there:
come one, come all. |

| Oh dang. I remembered I'm not going to be here next weekend for the rare plant sale. Dang, hopefully next year I'll be around. |

| I have DARK NIGHT in my hot little hands!! Thank you pelicanhead!! Because of your post, I called Armstrong Gardens and they offered to ship Dark Night from Encinitas to my local store for no cost. Yay! They actually shipped two of them, so if someone wants the other one, email me and I'll tell you which Armstrongs it is at. I posted pics of the DARK NIGHT plant I bought on my blog. THANK YOU PELICANHEAD! I'm a happy rose mommy! :) |

| Azurerose, I feel so honored to be on your blog. <3<3 They looked pretty healthy to me and I almost bought one myself, but I already had one and they also had a Ketchup and Mustard, so I bought that one instead. Carlyn |

| Oh how I wish I lived even close to California! I live way out in TN and there isn't any place close who has sold that gorgeous rose and I missed out on it this year too. :( I'll have to hope like so many others that someone will actually sell it this next spring. |

| Can't find this Rose anywhere. Been searching since last Summer :( The pictures are GLORIOUS!!! |
RE: Dark Night

| I'm going to rub it in a little bit :P My 2 bushs are planted fairly close to each other (18") and are covered in beautiful foliage with 21 buds that are about two weeks from blooming. I SHOULD have the picture posting thing down in a couple of weeks. This is one I really want like. |

| I ordered one last yr from Edmunds and it came really late and never broke dormancy. They don't have it this yr. and so I couldn't get it replaced. However, I found this seller on Ebay who supposedly has it. Check it out. I have one coming from him/her in a few weeks. |
