| HD has some new roses, and there are two I really want. One is Iceberg, the other is Red Masterpiece. Anyone growing either? I'm pretty sure I'm getting the Iceberg, and RM is a nice red, but I'd like to hear from people who have grown it. Both are own root.
Other roses I saw there are Red Freedom, Carefree Spirit, Carefree Celebration, Paradise, Bonica and Lady Elsie Mae. |

| My across the street neighbor has it right next to the mailbox, and I see it every day. It's got a good fragrance and seems to have decent Rust resistance. Not all that special, but nice. |

| May I ask, which location of the HD you referring to? They did not have Iceberg at the Tomball location. I drove there as soon as I saw your post. Anyway, I have two climbing iceberg, planted in February. They were grafted and in the body bags for $6.95 or something like that. They are now only about 7 ft in length and first time flowering. While, my climbing Blaze and climbing Don Juan has been flowering since two months after they were planted. They were all planted the same day. I am getting iceberg, because they are suppose to be shade tolerant. I planted one, but it died. This is my first year for planting roses. Wally world also have shrub roses for sell. |

| I bought Red Masterpiece a few years ago in a body bag - bought 3 and planted them at the corner of a flower bed - not all day sun, but good light and about a third day's sun. One died - the other 2 are tall and leggy, perhaps as they dont get as much light as they should but they always have blooms on them which are bright red and very pretty. They are not fragrant, which RM is supposed to be, so perhaps these are not actually Red Masterpiece. In fall of 2011, I bought several really healthy looking potted roses from Walmart that were named - they all bloomed well and were pretty much all the same color. This spring.....they faded and died and were not mourned - they were NOT the varieties they were supposed to be - so possibly my RM is not either. In any case....they bloom, are healthy and I enjoy them. I am not buying any more roses from Wally....they arent what they are supposed to be and tho its so tempting when they come in all full of leaves and buds - I am not biting again. Will stick with my roses from reputable growers. |

| JSmith, I went to the one on Loop 610W at Westpark. They only had one, and I'll probably get it this morning. Check with another HD, they are getting these pallets with several varieties of roses on them. Alameda, yours may not be Red Masterpiece, the one I saw was very fragrant. I'm not surprised about mis-labeled plants at all, though. |
|
| I had two of 'Red Masterpiece' for years. On rare occasions it had a strong damask fragrance, but most of the time it had little or none to my nose. After rain or fog with cool temperatures, the flowers got brown rotten spots and sometimes balled. It makes a big, vigorous plant that yields plenty of flowers on long, single stems. |

| I have one white Iceberg, in mostly shade - gets about 2-3 hours of direct sun per day, the rest of the day - filtered sun. I thought I'd try it as it is supposed to be shade tolerant. I know that's pushing the shade limits. It's still alive, but after 1 year, has had absolutely no growth, and I've only seen a few very small blooms. After all the great things I've heard about Iceberg, I'm chalking it up to my poor placement. I saw Red Masterpiece in either HD or Lowes a few years ago. It didn't impress me - especially when you can get roses like Chrysler Imperial, Crimson Glory, and Oklahoma at those places and they are infinitely superior roses. I grew Grand Masterpiece, and it was one of the few I ... removed. Don't know if they are at all related. If you like the big box options, you might try a Lowes. At least in my area they tend to have a better selection, and much healthier roses. Also, if you have more than one of each in a reasonable driving range, they often have different varieties from store to store. |

| I've had this rose for a number of years. Its similar to some of the other smelly reds mentioned on the thread. It's a good workhorse red for the garden. |
|
| Thanks, it sounds like it's something that I'll pass on. Harmony, I don't care for the big box options, but these roses were tempting, since they usually have ONLY Knockout. |

| Eahamel - it's my opinion that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the better big box options (HD, Lowes and Orchard Supply fall into that for me), and I still buy my lions share of roses from them, since we in CA. have really super options from them. But I also spread the love around to a handful of my local nurseries to support them, and order when I can't find locally. In the last 3 years, these are a list of the roses I've found - mostly at Lowes, some at HD and OS: cl. America, Arizona, Belindas Dream, Blue Girl, cl. Blaze, Brides Dream, Broadway, Cinco de Mayo, Color Magic, Charisma, Cherry Parfait, Crimson Glory, Chrysler Imperial, Dick Clark, Double Delight, Dream Come True, Easy Going, Fragrant Cloud, Flawless, Garden Party, Gemini, cl. Handel, Heirloom, Honey Bouquet, Hot Cocoa, Intrigue, Julie Child, Just Joey, Iceberg, Ingrid Bergman, Love, Living Easy, Marti Gras, Mary Rose, Miss All American Beauty, Montezuma, Mr. Lincoln, Oklahoma, Paradise, Perfumed Tiger, cl. Pink Don Juan, Pink Peace, Pink Promise, Pink Supreme, Proud Land, Royal Gold, Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth, Scentimental, Strike it Rich, cl. St. Josephs Coat, Sweet Sunglow, Sunsprite, Tiffany, Tropicana, Veterans Honor, Voodoo, a few I've dumped: Europeana, Medallian, Grand Masterpiece; and one of my favorites lost to gophers: Angel Face. Majority were the under $8 options, and they just worked for my budget and desire to have many different varieties. |

| Harmony, wow, you've found a lot at the big box stores! Maybe I've gone looking at the wrong time of year. HD has some other than Knockout right now, maybe they'll get more. It's time to be planting right now. |
