Hey folks, I'm serious this time. I want a rose vine for my pergola and that will also work for zone 5a. As much as possible, no thorns. Is there such rose vine? And where can buy it online? Thanks! Neil

We call them climbers or ramblers rather than vines. For the combination of winter hardiness and fewer thorns that you seek, I would suggest 'John Davis.' However, it is not thornless nor a very fast grower. You would need to plant two on the pergola and be patient. Click the "buy from" tab at the link. 'Heritage' is nearly thornless, but someone else will need to say whether it is cane-hardy in zone 5a. Both these roses will make shoots of 6-7 feet rather than the 8-12' shoots of strong climbers.

Reine des Violettes is thornless and gets fairly tall.
