How to encourage branching?

Hi,

I have a rose plant (Peace) that grows very much vertically from the terminal bud on every prune. The buds below the cut almost never sprout.

What are the different ways to encourage branching i.e. certain fertilizer/chemical and/or pruning technique etc?

Pruning is the major method of encouraging branching. As long as you have fed the bush appropriately and it receives sufficient water based upon climate and drainage, pruning is pretty much all you can do. Whether or not it branches a lot is basically genetically determined. Kim

I'd agree--pegging, the technique of bending branches down to encourage laterals, is much less effective with one bloom per stem hybrid teas.

You could plant HTs in clusters to improve the garden presentation, keeping in mind that the close spacing will encourage fungal disease.

Peace is a very upright grower and like most HTs is not a heavy brancher to begin with. If you want to try you can prune it low and then as it grows out cut the tips of each cane to see if it will give you more branches. It may not work because it may still only send out one new cane at each prune so your canes will end up looking sort of stepped instead of long and straight. And you will be delaying the bloom on it with each prune but you might try it.

Peace doesn't much like hard pruning, and performs better with very light pruning. As said previously, it doesn't branch all that much. It's just the nature of that cultivar. If you need a fuller look, place them in a triangle of three plants.
