Broken Canes

| So, we had a very heavy snow last week, and several of our canes are broken about a foot from the tip. I'm assuming I don't want to leave them that way through the winter, right? I don't want to risk inspiring new growth, but I'm worried about bug invasion and cold damage to the broken canes - they're not snapped, they're splintered. I think the plants are essentially dormant; canes are green but leaves are gone. It's pretty cold here at night (30-40 degrees) but it's in the 70's during the day.
Thanks for your thoughts...

| I'd prune to healthy wood, but I doubt if any harm would result from leaving them until spring. Roses in the wild suffer broken canes all the time. |

At this point you can cut then back to healthy wood. Did you know a broken cane may act the same as a cut cane? If new growth occurs it would begin just under the break of the damaged cane. Cutting will make it neater and lessen any more damage that might happen at the splits and breaks. Growth may occur regardless. You might as well lessen the damage and clean up the beds. |
