Hi I have been growing explorer roses for about seven or eight years. Each year they seem to get weaker less canes and a bit more die back after winter. I spry fertilize. Anyone having the same experience. My most healthy one is the climber William Baffin. Thanks for any advice

It sounds like they are overdue for a renewal pruning. How much pruning do you usually do? Getting rid of the oldest canes every year makes room for new canes, which the rose needs.

I hope that you are not seeing the results of virus infections.

I have most of the Explorers and many other Canadian roses. All do well and thrive in my garden. mad_gallica may be right. Although they seldom need pruning in the spring, it may be helpful to severely prune back one third of the canes each spring to keep them young. Older canes tend to slow down and sprawl with thinner laterals. The older canes on mine tend to discolor as they age. When that happens I cut them back almost to the ground. All mine are own root so that's no big problem. William Baffin and John Cabot are slow to repeat and any repeat is sparse. George Vancouver, Champlain, and the climber Quadra repeat well. I use slow release organic fertilizers, horse manure, and don't spray.

I think the Explorer roses are the easiest care roses there are! I have never had to spray any of mine. They all get a shovelful of mixed food in May and that is all the care I have to give them. I will prune out the biggest canes on the big ones like William Baffin and John CAbot. Valerie

I've had a number of Explorer's and only one has survived, William Baffin. Now that is not saying that much as a lot of roses have succumbed to my garden or care. I believe it is mostly due to too low a pH. It seems to bother some roses more than others. OGR's for example do better. I know I should fix that and I'm working on it. I plan to get really serious with lime this Winter and Spring. Well, that is getting it on for a warm up of the soil.
