Rose hip question !

Posted by prettypetals GA 7 (My Page) on

I was moving some roses out from behind some big shrubs and noticed hips on them AFTER I cut the tall, lanky canes off. grrrr.... Anyways, they are a light to medium orange color. How can I tell if they are OK to use? Wasn't sure if they needed to stay on the bush longer. Do I need to just pick them off the cut off canes and let them sit for a while or what? Thanks for anyones help! Judy

RE: Rose hip question !

Some people cut them off with some stem left on and place the hip with the stem part downward in wet sand for further ripening (not the hip in the sand, just the stem).

What do you want to use them for (another way of asking how ripe you want them to be before doing something with them)?

Thanks Henry!

Hi York rose, I just want to try to grow some from seed and see what I can get. I don't know anything about collecting the hips and how ripe they need be and how I can tell when they are ripe enough. I have looked at a few old threads but wanted the simplest steps to go from seed to plant. Not sure how long it will take them to bloom but I wanted to play around and have some fun with it. I might try next year to pollinate certain roses but this time I just want to take what the sweet bees have pollenated for me. Make any sense?? Thanks, Judy

RE: Rose hip question !

Cut a hip open. If seeds are cream color, they are mature; if seeds are green, they are immature.

If you want to grow from seed, remove seeds from hip; clean orange flesh from seeds; wrap seeds in a damp paper towel, put in a zip lock bag, and put in your frig; seeds should begin to sprout roots in early January. Plant sprouted seeds into a mix of equal parts of potting soil and perlite. Germination will occur in 3-4 days. Grow under fluorescent light. Many modern hybrids bloom in 4-6 weeks.

Thanks Dave, That sounds so nice and easy for me. I really don't have any fluorescent lights so is there a substitute I can use or can I leave them in the frig longer before adding them to soil? I might run to Home Depot and look for some fluorescent light kits and see if I can rig me up a spot on my carport to let them grow under the lights. My carport usually stays around 48 - 50 degrees during the winter so hopefully it won't be tooo cold. Thanks, Judy

RE: Rose hip question !

50 degrees F should work great. When growing under fluorescent lights, keep topmost leaves as close to light bulbs as possible.

RE: Rose hip question !

Thanks Dave, Can I ask two more questions? If I leave the seed inside the rose hip and wait about putting them on a damp paper towel will they last OK in the hip? If so, do I store the whole rose hip in the frig? I was thinking that way I might could postpone the sprouting and maybe pot them up and see if I could skip the fluorescent light. Just wondering! RE: Rose hip question !

I normally leave the seeds in the hips to prevent germination before I am ready.

Thanks alot Henry! That is alot of helpful information. I put it on my favorites so I can go back and read when I have other questions. Thank you for helping me out, Judy

RE: Rose hip question !

Yes, leaving seeds in hip delays germination. My goal is to get early germination which leads to larger plants.

RE: Rose hip question !

Thank you Dave! So do you think I would have success if I do leave them in the hips and then hopefully if they do germinate it will start being warm enough and I won't need to use fluorescent lights? As you can tell I am a complete newbie to the whole process but it seems like it would be fun. Thank you again, Judy

RE: Rose hip question !

That should work: shell and sow seeds in early spring.
For me, a lot of the fun of hybridizing is watching young plants grow and bloom during winter.
Good luck.

RE: Rose hip question !

Thanks Dave, One more question. Do I store the unopened hips in the frig? Thanks, Judy

 o
RE: Rose hip question !

Yes you can keep them in the frig. I wrap my hips in a dry paper towel secured with scotch tape and put them in a plastic bag. Check on them in a week or two to make sure the hips are not getting soft, if they are then it is time to take the seeds out of the hip. You can then clean the orange flesh off of the seeds then wrap the seeds in a damp paper towel and put in plastic bag then back into frig again. Check on them once a week to see if they have germinated. And one more thing and it is the most important part, you must do this ..................
you have to post pictures of your new seedlings when they bloom. ;)
Good Luck!

RE: Rose hip question !

Thanks a bunch ramblinrosez! I will definitely post my babies when they show their pretty faces. I am soooo ready to do this. I might end up getting me one of those fluorescent light kits and play with it both ways. FUN FUN FUN!! Can't wait. Thanks to everyone for all their info, Judy
