| I would love to hear from Niels and anyone else in Denmark what some of the popular older roses that are found in gardens and on farms.
Especially if anyone knows what might have been on Bornholm. I would love to put in a couple of roses that remind mom of the farm outside Nyker. We usually went back in the fall, so most of the time the roses were close to done. I don't really remember what my grandmother had in her front yard. But I think their was a big rambler type of small double yellow down at the farm. My grandmother has been gone for years, moms brother too, my aunt moved and sold the farm and my cousin left for the military. No one really left from the island to ask. (on a non rose note, if anyone knows the lemon yellow crab apple that used to grow pretty wild I would love the name of that one too. I found a Transcendent Crab at Trees of Antiquity that sounds like the one) |

| I prefer to ask a friend growing roses on this island in the Baltic Sea to get accurate local information - what years/decades are we looking at? We do have a person who has specialized and written about plants and roses growing in Danish gardens during the last 400 years: See link. On another island (Langeland) they even have a collection of roses gathered from many different parts of Denmark. Some of these specialist have formed a gardenhistoryforum - with most members from sweden, Denmark. Norway and other European countries. |

| I was born there, Ronne, but mom just went home for be to be born there. She had left in the 50's. But probably pre-WWII would be more what Mom would remember. Our farm was old, the old pig barn was 1600's, the Frilandsmuseet outside Kobenhavn wanted to take it apart for their museum but found a closer one from that age. Grandma moved to town and my uncle ran the farm, to a house that was kind of across the street from the Nyker Round church. My relatives have been on the island for a long time, 1500's? |

| This is a really interesting topic for me too. I have connections to the town of Schleswig (Slesvik), which is now on the German side of the border, but every time I visit I am impressed by this lovely red rose that everyone has in their gardens. Even in the fall these roses are still blooming, even in the cold wind. I also have seen the same red rose growing on the Danish side, in the countryside around Kolding. Would anyone have an idea what this rose might be? I would love to have it in my garden. It is not only beautiful and a reminder of the "old country," but it seems to be very hardy! Thanks for posting a great topic! I will look at the suggested links too. -Brighid |

| Thanks for the help Neils! I am so sorry, long day and I wrote about our roots and forgot to thank you! Brighid, I have never been to that part, but I hear it is really pretty! I love visiting the castles and museums in Denmark, I do remember Rosenborg in the summer. I seem to remember a yellow rose that was along some of the roads etc. Mom was so happy making apple butter and remembering helping her mom and grandma making from their crab apples. She says they were yellow like lemons. I figured the one I found in Paso Robles-CA should be close. We have vinca major growing because she remembers having it at the farm. I would like to do a grape arbor, the farm was named after it's grapevine (vintreagaard) I like plants that have a history or bring back good memories. |

| I have no recent family from anywhere but here in the U.S., but I think half my garden is because it makes me think of my grandmother's garden. My grandmother had the greenest thumb I've ever seen, and she had a very lush garden. My first rose was bought because it was the closest thing I could find that looked like one in her garden. ALL my gardening memories and love came from her. I get enormous joy from trying to coax something into growing bigger, and getting something to bloom for me - it's just the nicest thing I can do outdoors! |
