Fragrant drift roses.. Do they exist?

Posted by DisplacedClevelander 6a (My Page) on

Stumbled upon some drift roses the other day and I was impressed. They were really pretty and so am now contemplating adding some to my garden.

But here's the catch.. All of the roses in my garden are fragrant. Are there any fragrant drift rose varieties?

Any general feedback on drift roses? Are they disease resistant?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

RE: Fragrant drift roses.. Do they exist?

As far as I know, none of the drift roses are fragrant. I’m usually somewhat of a fragrance snob, but I do grow both Apricot Drift and Coral Drift due to their compact size and shape, bloom power and disease resistance. I don’t spray my Drifts at all, and in my garden where even Knockouts will blackspot, my drifts don’t have any issue with BS. My Coral Drifts will sometimes have a touch of powdery mildew early in the Spring, but they recover quickly without spraying. PM is not a fungal problem I normally have here with roses, so if they get it here, I'm not sure how they would do where PM actually is common. Mine stay less than 3 ft high, nicely rounded and always full of blooms…perfect for edging beds. They don’t require pruning and will bloom continually without deadheading (they look better if you deadhead, but I rarely bother with mine and it doesn’t seem to hinder their ability to keep pumping out new blooms). They are also fairly shade tolerant.

Here’s the Star Roses website with info on their Drift Rose Series: http://www.starrosesandplants.com/drift-roses

Coral Drift always loaded with blooms...deadheading all those spent blooms would be a constant chore:
