Who's an outstanding addition to your garden this year?

| I added Louisa Stone (grafted from Pickering) to the garden this year, and what a performer! No spray in our yard, and she is ABSOLUTELY clean. We had horribly dry weather this summer, and she didn't get any supplemental water and still put out some blooms. A hard freeze thie weekend, and she's still at it. Setting some hips, too. A GREAT rose!
Here she is earlier in the summer:
A couple weeks ago before the freezing weather hit (LOVE the color of the newer foliage):
And this morning, after weekend lows in the upper 20s and a week or so of rainy weather:
Definitely a keeper! |

I am very new to roses, and im sure its not as fancy or lovely as others, But i bought an iceberg rose, and this bush bloomed all summer, and is still pushing them out! I havent had disease issues, i think its just wonderful. Also lasts nice in a vase. Im going to research Louisa Stone, it looks great! Cant wait to see what others post, so i can add to the evergrowing list! :) |

| She's just beautiful! I can see why you love her and that new foliage. I especially love the color in the second picture. Thanks for sharing, Judy |
Oops, I forgot to answer your question!

| One of my newest best blooming roses this year has to be Heaven On Earth. I have a new computer and haven't really downloaded any new pics to photobucket so i'm not including a picture but she has been beautiful all summer. I don't have much blooming now due to my whole yard being completely shade now. waaaaa! Judy |

I bought several huge potted roses on sale for $5 - I was shocked and estatic to find Over The Moon [also Ch-Ching, Shockwave]. I got the only 2 Over The Moons....they are huge, healthy and have the biggest, most beautifully formed blooms in a luscious shade of apricot - my favorite color. I am enchanted with them and planted them in a spot I can easily see them on either side of an arbor. I havent read much about this rose, but the two I have are spectatular! Judith |

| I think I would nominate Marilyn Monroe, California Dreamin', and Carding Mill with possibly Claire Austin also on that list. |

| Souvenier de la Malmaison - I've had few roses take off so fast their first year. Good bloom, vigorous clean growth. |

| 'Pope John Paul II' (Jacsegra) was good last year, and was GREAT this year. Flowers are larger, consistant good form, stems are longer, productivity even better, fragrance is there...its all good.
'Lady Emma Hamilton', new this year, was very good also. It has a warm orange-yellow-apricot flower that contrasts with burgundy-red new canes, fat reddish buds, and deep, dark, blue-green foliage. Many different aspects of beauty combined into one plant. Plus fragrance.

| Classic Woman has wonderful, huge and fragrant cream colored flowers that last very well indoors and on the bush. Le Vesuve has been a blooming machine even though it's a young plant and I love the rose-pink color with the underside of the petals being a richer, darker pink. |

| It's much too early to decide the worth of this year's additions to my garden. I usually give a rose at least four years before evaluating it. I can see that conditions are different in warmer climates! One that took off very soon is Swan Lake with two blooms on a plant less than one foot tall, planted in May. But I'll make up my mind when it covers its structure. |

| I added four roses to my garden this year, three of which have been spectacular in their own way. Moonstone is absolutely beautiful when in bloom, the heavy white flowers just tinged with pink are stunning. Further, each flower lasts for a few weeks. Lavande, a low growing rose blooms like a maniac all summer, putting forth about 9 new flowers each flush. While each flower only lasts about three-five days the speed at which it creates new blooms is just incredible. Finally, while my Don Juan is just getting started the scent is heavenly and reminds me strongly of kool-aid. In fact, I find it hard to stop smelling it. |

| I am in love with my Peppermint Splash. Received as a band in Septemeber, late in fact, it is blooming its little heart out this late in Novemeber and has grown to a size I didn't expect until next spring already. The first bloom it had on it was over 4 inches across. The subsequent ones are also large and the foliage is spreading out as well as UP. The color of the leaves (to me) is gorgeous against the striped flowers. The downside is the slight fragrance. I like my "smelly" roses but I will settle for one this nice even without a nice smell. It is the one that gets the ost attention in my garden currently.

| I have to say, the best new ones I got this season were all Kordes roses. One came from Pickering, and the other two from Palatine. The one from Pickering is FAIREST CAPE. It's a lovely orange w/yellow reverse HT that grew to about 5ft and bloomed pretty well for a first yr rose. Very long-lasting blooms too.
The two from Palatine are SOUTH AFRICA and GOLDEN FREELANDER. Both grew to nice big-sized bushes pretty fast and bloomed like crazy. The scent on SA during the first flush was a strong, delicious, fruity-sweet one.
GF repeated very well, and had an interesting range of colors between light orange, copper, apricot and yellow. Also very long-lasting blooms.

| I bought a black magic rose from JP and it is an extremely long lasting rose. This baby gave me a great show in the spring and again in the fall starting August up until now nonstop. It has a wonderful form that keeps for about 3-4 days, but the flower itself last forever. The color was a really deep, dark, velvety red for the first week and faded out a little bit after that, but it's never been "blue" out like Mr. Lincoln that I have (who, btw, send up flowers that last for 2 days....) I think everyone should try this rose out. One of the best hybrid tea imho, I'd say if only it has more fragrance (Although it does have a faint fresh smell...) |

I'll mention Neptune for this yrs addition. After planting I then read that I should expect 6 rounds of blooms from it in one season. I found this at: Not at all bad with 4 rounds of great cut flowers totaling 33 cuts with a mid season planting and a slightly off peek best zones area. By mid May I should get round 5. I can see at least 10 more cuts. Missing only one round of the 6 expected. (again I am slightly off on zone best planting zone for 6 total rounds) Winter Hardy by zone limits: Time will tell I did a low fair to good 2 inch root protection and nothing more than that. The not so good: It isn't as disease tolerant as some would really want in regard to control measures needed. In fairness at Weeks Roses disease tolerant is not mentioned for this rose. For me Neptune is very much a keeper and well worth the smaller problem that I did encounter requiring some occasional extra gardening duties. |

| The best of my new additions to my garden this year is hands down is the Kordes rose CUBANA. None stop bloomer even though it has not been in full sun. I on purpose did not spray it just to see how disese resistant it really is and it did not disapoint. Even now it is blooming and staying very clean. This picture does not really show it, but the color of the blooms are different hues of pinks and oranges. Liz

An oldie but goodie I added was Brigadoon. It has the most beautiful blooms I have ever seen. Pope John Paul II was so gorgeous I added a second bush. I also added Here's Gert, Artic Circle, Just Peachy, and Stephen Rulo from Wisconsin Roses and they are all four gorgeous blooming roses this first year. "Over the Moon" I added in the Spring and it is knockdown dead to rights gorgeous. "Heart'O Gold", the Dykstra bred HT, is beautiful. "Pink Promise" the Breast Cancer awareness rose is wonderful. "Nicole Carol Miller" is a lovely mauve with wonderful fragrance. I like this one ALOT!! "Pumpkin Patch" pumpkin orange colored flowers on a very vigorous and healthy floribunda bush. "Rock And Roll" is a beautiful red/white striped grandiflora everyone should have. John |

| hoovb, the JPII rose is fantastic. Almost wish I could see the maroon one behind the white...they look like fraternal twins. |

| I agree. HoovB -- That purple behind PJPII looks like a matched set with it. What is it? Is that a bouquet or are they growing that way? Kathy |

| I am loving this thread with tons of pics! This sure is fantastic winter eye-candy!with all these lovely roses. I also loved another previous eye-candy which was Celestial Rose's striped seedling. I'm all gaa-gaa for all this eye-candy for the winter! Connie it's also fantastic to see how vigorous a new rose can be!!!! and to see the entire rose plant. Wow that is a record-breaker rose (and I thought that my 1/2-year Climbing America and 1st-year Lincolns were giants, LOL). Beth, again, gorgeous roses. It's fantastic to see a scented fragrant rose like South Africa. It has a really interesting history behind it. One of its first placement as a rose was in the Aids Memorial Garden in South Africa which actually started as an ancient vegetable garden to help sailors from scurvy back in the 17th century. Beautiful Kordes roses everyone posted and Louisa Stone too! HoovB I enjoyed the classic beauty of your Pope John--it reminds me of JeffAurora's gorgeous beautiful roses. I really miss JeffAurora's roses, haven't seen him at the gallery for a really, really long time, not since mid-summer. Wonderful thread, Lucretia... |

Over the Moon can be found in Edmunds catalog. I'm waiting to hear how the color and bloom form holds up in the heat and of course how attractive to Thrips it is since they can be a big problem here.....Like another poster I don't get overly exercised about a new rose until I've grown it for a couple/3 years. However one that's shown promise this year is an own root rose from Heirloom called Good Life. It has also been sinfully fragrant for some reason, something I wasn't expecting. Here it is combined in a vase with the white HT Tineke:

Almost wish I could see the maroon one behind the white...they look like fraternal twins. That purple behind PJPII looks like a matched set with it. What is it? Is that a bouquet or are they growing that way? That's 'Firefighter' which gets more and more and more outstanding every year. It is a dusky red, not purple--color is hard to catch with my camera. Heavenly fragrance, too. I'm thinking I need to remove a few non-fragrant HTs and plant more 'Firefighter'.

Just to let you know, my "Over The Moon" that started as a bareroot in the Spring is now abut 4 1/2' tall and is blooming like crazy and they are beautifully made and of good size. The form on most is impeccable and I think could make a fine exhibition rose. Mine is definitely lightly fragrant. The bush itself has stayed very clean of BS or PM and there didn't seem to be any insect problem either. I will see how winter hardy it is this winter because I don't winter protect except to let oak and maple leaves that fall are allowed to cover the rose beds and then be blown out in the Spring. | I'm expecting more from Pope JPII next year based on the opinions above. For me, it was okay, but no big thrill. My best were: Stephen's Big Purple - tons and tons of large (6 inch) flowers. Wow!! Great fragrance!! Tournament of Roses - tons and tons of flowers. Most people in my garden were drawn to this rose! Enchanted Evening - ditto, but it also has fragrance Julia Child - 'nuff said Golden Celebration - lovely, lovely bush form, great fragrance. In my climate, blackspot is not an issue so YMMV. Carol |

| Pope John Paul II remains better than outstanding. Also like Sweetness. And the McCartney Rose is doing much better since it moved to the all day sun. |
